Fulton Speedway 5/4/24 Recap!
First off, let's take a second to admire this car that the guys at ACE designed for us!
Yesterday was a very wacky day, I got out of work late, so I was running late to get to the track, missing our hotlap session, but still ready to run for our heat race.
Heat Race- Started off p6 and as soon as the green dropped I could tell this car felt 10 times better than it did last week now that we got a couple minor things corrected, we were able to avoid the first caution, and made it up to p3. Now here is my biggest issue and something I'm going to have to work on this season, when I am racing against other drivers I will not let them best me, so I am very willing to drive beyond the capability of myself and my car, which is exactly what happened. Me and the first & second place cars were right on top of eachother coming into turns 3 and 4, with them looking to run low I decided to throw it out wide and try to get some speed off the corner, this is where our night ended. I'm still not exactly sure what happened, but suddenly my back end jumped right out and my front end darted in. At the time I figured I just lost it, putting too much power down and over rotating, but after watching replays it looks like I was far enough out of the corner to not have to worry about that. Regardless I darted towards the infield, collecting a car as I came across the track. After getting pulled back to the trailer we found that my steering control arm was broken, luckily SJP+ had the part right there, but with my lack of experience changing these parts it was the end of our night. We did finally get the car back together, and loaded in one piece, which I feel happy about considering who much worse it could have been.
Overall, as much as it sucks that we had a spin that ended our night, those few laps fighting for the lead were an adrenaline rush like no other, and I cannot wait to get back out there. I'm really happy that we have the car figured out now, I can confidently tell you that car has the speed to win once I get more experience and more skill. I think for the next week or so I should probably back off and just log laps and learn to drive more consistently, but that is easier said than done!
