Geothermal Leak Detection — Leak Located & Confirmed

A few weeks ago, we shared an upcoming leak detection project involving a large geothermal heating and cooling system at a Pennsylvania school district.

The system consists of 24 geothermal circuits, approximately 240 underground wells, and several miles of buried piping. Three circuits were suspected of leaking, presenting a challenging diagnostic project due to the size of the system and the very small amount of water loss.

After extensive diagnostic testing and surveying, Mainline Leak Detection successfully isolated and located a small underground leak and marked the area for excavation.

A contractor later excavated at the marked location and confirmed the leak at a buried pipe joint.

Small leaks on large geothermal systems can be particularly difficult to locate. Minimal water loss can produce very little detectable sound, while the amount of underground piping makes narrowing down the source even more challenging.

Finding and marking the leak before excavation allowed the repair contractor to target a specific area rather than searching through thousands of feet of buried geothermal piping.

🚨 STAY TUNED… This One Should Be Interesting. 🚨

Mainline Leak Detection is preparing for an upcoming multi-day geothermal leak investigation for a school district.

This geothermal system is the primary source of heating and cooling for the entire school and consists of 24 underground circuits feeding 240 geothermal wells, with several miles of underground piping connecting the system.

Currently, 3 of the 24 circuits are leaking—and somewhere within all that underground piping is the source of the problem.

Finding it will require a methodical approach, specialized leak detection equipment, acoustical diagnostics, and potentially tracer gas to help narrow down the source.

This is the kind of challenging investigation where patience, experience, and following the evidence one step at a time really matter.

While many of us were thankful to see the rain roll through last night, we’re still experiencing severe drought conditions. Every gallon of water matters, and unfortunately, thousands of gallons can be lost each month from a hidden plumbing leak without the homeowner ever realizing it.

💧 One leak turned into two—but accurate diagnostics saved time, money, and unnecessary excavation.

Mainline Leak Detection was recently called to a townhouse community after water began surfacing through the middle of a newly paved parking lot. Based on where the water was visible, the plumbing contractor was preparing to excavate directly in the middle of the new pavement.

After performing a complete leak detection survey using acoustical and underground utility locating equipment, we determined the leak was approximately 60 feet away from where the water was actually surfacing. The leak location was marked, and during excavation the plumbing contractor uncovered a pinhole leak in a 2-inch copper water main directly beneath our markings.

Shortly after that repair was completed, water continued to surface, indicating a second leak within the system. We returned to the site, performed another diagnostic survey, and accurately identified a second leak in a different section of the parking lot, allowing the contractor to proceed with confidence.

This job is a great reminder that water rarely surfaces directly above the source of an underground leak. Water follows the path of least resistance, often traveling long distances before becoming visible. Accurate leak detection helps minimize unnecessary excavation, protects newly paved surfaces, and gets repairs completed faster.

A homeowner recently contacted Mainline Leak Detection after discovering water dripping from their first-floor ceiling. They had already removed wet drywall and spent time trying to track down the source themselves, but the leak remained hidden.

Using a borescope camera, we traced the moisture to the second-floor bathroom. We then utilizes thermal imaging with an infrared camera, which identified an area of elevated moisture behind the shower wall.

After opening the wall in the targeted location, a copper water line was found with a pinhole leak—confirming the source of the problem. The water supply to the second-floor bathroom was shut off to prevent additional damage, and the homeowner was advised to contact a licensed plumber to complete the repair.

A homeowner recently moved back into his house after months of repairs following a devastating house fire. Just as life was getting back to normal, he received an unexpected shock—an $8,000 water bill, up from the few hundred dollars he would normally expect.

Another underground leak successfully located and confirmed!

This leak was creating water that surfaced near the top of a shared driveway serving five homes. After a thorough diagnostic investigation, Mainline Leak Detection identified and marked the suspected leak location using specialized acoustical leak detection equipment.

Today, I met with the plumbing contractor as they excavated the marked area. Approximately 5 feet below the pavement, they uncovered the leaking water line exactly where it had been marked. The source of the leak was a 1¼-inch copper water line with a hole measuring approximately 1/8 inch in diameter.

Finding an underground leak before excavation helps reduce unnecessary digging, saves valuable time, and minimizes repair costs—especially in situations like this where multiple water service lines are present.

Thank you to the plumbing crew for another great repair. It’s always rewarding to see a leak confirmed exactly where it was located.
