The MAK Center is pleased to present a book launch celebrating "At the Edge of Where God Built: Language. Concepts. Islamic Architecture." Join us on Thursday, July 30 at the MAK Center at the Schindler House for a conversation between Ziad Jamaleddine of L.E.FT Architects and architect and urban designer Maryam Eskandari.

The book undertakes a critical examination of L.E.FT Architects’ work from the past decade, reorganizing their designs, research, and pedagogy around five key Arabic spatial terms: mataf (circumambulation space), jami (mosque space), riwaq (a courtyard’s colonnade), dar (domestic space), and khirba (a ruin). Rooted in Arab-speaking, Islamic geographies of the Middle East and North Africa, these concepts offer a framework for understanding contemporary architecture beyond fixed typologies, revealing its fluid and multifaceted possibilities.

The MAK Center for Art and Architecture is pleased to present a book launch celebrating At the Edge of Where God Built, with Ziad Jamaleddine of L.E.FT Architects in conversation with Maryam Eskandari.

At the Edge of Where God Built: Language. Concepts. Islamic Architecture. undertakes a critical examination of L.E.FT Architects’ diverse body of work from the past decade, reorganizing their designs, research, and pedagogy around five key Arabic spatial terms: mataf (circumambulation space), jami (mosque space), riwaq (a courtyard’s colonnade), dar (domestic space), and khirba (a ruin). Rooted in the Arab-speaking, Islamic geographies of the Middle East and North Africa, these terms illuminate and conceptualize L.E.FT’s investigations into forms of contemporary religious and non-religious architecture. By reframing Islamic architecture beyond the fixed typologies that have historically defined it, the book proposes a fluid, multifaceted approach to understanding its contemporary manifestations.

What if restoring urban nature meant repairing histories, habitats, and relationships all at once?
At MIIM Designs, we’re inspired by projects that challenge conventional approaches to urban ecology and expand how we think about stewardship, infrastructure, and design justice.

Maryam Eskandari's “Reparative Ecologies of Return: Rewilding the El Segundo Gateway” — featured in The Plan - Architecture Magazine Journal’s Fall 2025 issue, The Nature of Cities — offers a vision for ecological and cultural repair through landscape architecture.

Situated between the Chevron Refinery and LAX, the project reimagines a constrained urban corridor as multispecies infrastructure: reconnecting hydrological systems, supporting the endangered El Segundo blue butterfly, and translating Tongva spatial knowledge into a contemporary civic landscape.

The work asks us to reconsider what urban regeneration can mean — not simply beautification, but reciprocity, memory, and long-term care.
