Today felt like the third Friday of the week for us, how about you? But it was a great day. We did some clearance trimming for a service line, and also removed a large leaning Hackberry over a structure both in Cushing today, and finished off the day with some ice cream and cherry limeades from Braums!

While out running estimates on tree work in Fairfax and Burbank today, I couldn’t pass up the chance to take the scenic drive down Re*****on road off highways 60 and 18. 😌

The beauty of nature and integral role played by trees! This is absolutely the sound of my childhood!

The cicada you hear right now has been underground for 13 or 17 years — depending on the species. 🌳

It emerged from an egg laid in a tree branch. It fell to the ground. It burrowed. And for 13 or 17 years, in complete darkness, it fed on tree root sap and developed through five nymph stages.

Then, when the soil temperature reached exactly 64°F, millions of them emerged on the same night.

They have 4 to 6 weeks above ground to moult, find a mate, lay eggs, and die.

The song is the male calling for a female. At up to 100 decibels — the loudest insect sound on Earth — it can be heard half a mile away.

The sound that fills your summer evenings is the sound of 17 years of waiting, given 6 weeks to be heard.

Yard expansion yesterday for a great repeat client. We also ran our brush cutter down in their creek bottom and in the old mule pen with a gate too narrow for mowers. Our 42” brush cutter paired to our Kymron mini (stand-on) skid steer is a pretty impressive combination! Maneuverable in tight areas, surprisingly capable on steep grades, and chops everything from grass to young trees!
After this project we still had time to squeeze in a second job; removing storm damage from a 100+ year old pin oak and trimming an American Elm over a beautiful new patio area. (No photographic evidence for those 😅).

A heartfelt thank you to Robert and all the people involved in the Pawnee Steam and Gas Engine Show! This is the 2nd or 3rd time in the last ~18 years I have asked them to take some of our logs and mill them into beautiful lumber, and the sentiment of it being milled right here locally, using equipment like my grand and great grandparents used is priceless. I’m not 100% sure what all this sycamore and pine lumber will be used for, but I do imagine I’ll make a few more of these handy stools 😊.

Hometown work in Pawnee today! I’ve realized the worst part about working with a torn bicep tendon (bad decision last week) is watching myself work SO SLOWWWW. It’s a struggle, but God gave us patience! Sometimes we have to use it on ourselves more than on others 🤪

Peekaboo! We see you through the hollow of these maple logs! More nostalgia for me today as we worked only a couple miles from an old hay loft I used to toss square bales up into—just a stone’s throw from historic and majestic Belford Bridge on nine mile road west of Ralston. I love our rural community, and I embrace the fact I’m already old enough to bore my kids with the cliche’ dad phrases 😅
“I hauled hay from that field”
“Trimmed a tree for them.”
“Built fence for that guy’s grandad.”

Today, we removed a black jack oak which was killed by the awful fires SW of Stillwater, and performed restorative pruning on the backyard pecan trees which were damaged by the same fire. With a long term plan of proper care and pruning, the pecans should pull through!
We also had a pleasant surprise when one of my Pawnee High School mates spotted us and said “hi”. (Class 2004 😲).
