Pretty soon we will be running our AC units. Here is a very good video on what is going on in the HVAC trade. Avoid these companies that send out salesman. They are there on commission and will tell you whatever it takes. For service, get a PSEG worry free plan. They do installations too. But make sure you find reputable owner operated contractors. People like me who care what you think about them. That is a character trait and not all people have. People are people.
I had an old school doctor who once explained it to me best.

Hello friends. I've posted some stuff on battery backups before and wanted to share this with you. If you have a hot water tank that is gas and vents to a chimney flue you're ok if the power goes out. But if you have a high efficency with a direct vent to outside, it will have a motorized exhaust motor. The heater will not run if it is not powered to remove the carbon monoxide from the flames. Also the fan runs only when the unit needs a flame and shuts off when the tank is hot. This allows you to use the battery somewhere else. A larger one could do your furnace or boiler and hot water as they both run intermittent. The unit can be charged by your car, a regular outlet, a generator outlet or solar panel. Be like me. Buy a s**t load of stuff and hope you never need any of it. Enjoy the game tomorrow. ๐Ÿ™‚

It may be ghetto, but it will work. You want to prevent snow build up or being sucked in to the air intake and shutting down the unit. The exhaust is hot. 10ft 1/2" emt cut in half to 5ft. Ends smashed, driven and screwed down with 1/2" emt straps.

Connect your generator to your furnace or boiler.
This of course will work with your gasoline generator. Pretty simple to do with any receptacle outlet.
You're wiring a receptacle as you normally would but eliminating the wires in that box going to the furnace or boiler. So just 3 wires to the outlet from the power coming in. Black, white, green.
Then you are cord connecting the unit to the receptacle. So the 3 wires from the unit connect to the cord. Black, white, green tie together and just plug it in. When power goes out and your generator is gas and outdoors, unplug from the receptacle on the unit and connect it to the long extension cord to the generator. *never start or stop the generator with a load on it. Unplug everything before starting or stopping the generator. Not doing this could damage the appliances.

Greetings followers!
Just a reminder with holidays lights:
Check each individual strand in the GFCI receptacle that you'll be using before you link them all up. The reason being, if your GFCI receptacle trips, you don't want to be trying to figure out what strand in the chain is bad. If that happens, the easiest way is to reset the GFCI an run an extension cord to each strand and plug them in individually until it trips again. Fish it out and throw it away. When it trips, the GFCI is doing what it's supposed to be doing.
Also, unless the GFCI receptacle is where you're plugging them in to you're going to have to find it to reset it. It could be in the basement, the garage, a powder room. The reason is back in the day you could run them all off one location. Today, you still can but not out of a bathroom or powder room. It could be in the electrical panel too as a circuit breaker.
Also, if an outdoor GFCI is on a switch or timer, the device needs to be energized for you to reset it. Good luck and don't overload those strands.

Here's a video I made of a battery and inverter rig I built just for my 1st floor furnace. That furnace is in a sub panel for my kitchen. I isolated the one circuit for the furnace so it does not drain the larger batteries I use for the rest of the house. Those batteries are 320 amp hr. Being that I have no 240 appliances aside from air conditioning units that I do not need in the event of an emergency, I can safely use 2- 120 volt inverters with 2 batteries to power the whole house. You're going to have to be pretty handy to do all of that working between generators and solar panels for long term charging of the batteries. This video is about the one circuit. 14 days during Hurricane Sandy, the #1 item I was hooking up to people's generators was their furnace. Refrigerators and lights, they could just plug in to the generator outlets.
That green generator inlet will allow you to just plug in from your generator for whatever you want it to control. My intent here is to show another option to keep that furnace running if you have no fuel. I have an automatic whole house generator and a gasoline generator. I also have plug in wall chargers to charge the batteries from a wall outlet when on generator power. The fact here is our energy grid can go down from any number of things. Downed power lines from high winds, an extended outage from an ice storm or worse, a cyber attack. Hurricane Sandy and the Halloween storm a yr or so later was a real wake up call for me having seen a wider picture of how bad it was for everyone. How difficult it was to get around with the streets closed off. No communication other than your cell phone. If you plan on buying one of these all in one type units like a Jackery or Ecoflow, keep in mind they may promise you long term use and those little solar panels don't do much. So buy larger than you think you need and have a way to charge them.
Google LifePo4 battery. It is newer technology and the price has come way down on them. It is not lead acid or lithium ion. It is lithium iron phosphate. It has a battery management system and does not have the thermal runaway that ion has where it can catch fire. They are designed to last up to 10,000 cycles and can last many years.
I don't want to go on a rant here because I could go on forever but if you remember how people lost their minds over toilet paper, just imagine what they would do for food and that is providing you have cash to pay for it if credit card processing is down. There are ton's of Utube videos I think you all should be watching. When Costco is selling emergency food buckets and battery back up systems, you know there's a demand for it.
