You flip the switch on the first cold night and the gas fireplace does absolutely nothing. πŸ₯Ά

Most of the time the pilot light just went out over the summer. Here's the quick version:

πŸ”₯ Check the label inside the lower access panel first. Your manufacturer's steps come first.
πŸ”₯ Turn the k**b to OFF and wait at least 5 minutes before relighting.
πŸ”₯ Smell gas at any point? Don't light anything. Leave the house and call the gas company from outside.

Stop and call a pro if the pilot won't stay lit after three tries, the flame is weak or yellow, or the igniter clicks but never lights it.

The first cold front hits Birmingham and you flip on the gas fireplace for the first time since spring. πŸ”₯

Hold up. A few months off can mean spiders nesting in the burner ports, dust on the logs and dead remote batteries.

Quick check before you light it:
πŸ”₯ Swap the remote batteries
πŸ”₯ Clear the area in front of the fireplace
πŸ”₯ Test your carbon monoxide detectors
πŸ”₯ Watch the flame: blue with yellow tips is good, mostly yellow or orange is not

Call a technician if the pilot won't stay lit, you see soot on the glass, or it lights with a loud whoosh. If you ever smell gas, leave the house and call the gas company first. Don't take apart the burner or gas valve yourself.

It's 2am, the house is quiet, and your carbon monoxide alarm starts screaming. Do you know what to do? 🚨

Here's the short version:

πŸƒ Get everyone out, pets too. Don't stop to open windows or hunt for the source.
πŸ“ž Call 911 from outside and tell them if anyone feels sick.
πŸšͺ Stay out until responders say it's safe.
πŸ”§ Don't restart the furnace, water heater or gas fireplace until it's been inspected.

CO has no color and no smell, and headaches and dizziness are easy to mistake for the flu. So when in doubt, treat it as real. A few minutes in the yard beats the alternative.

Quick question from all of us at Douglas: do you know when your CO alarms were last tested? Tell us in the comments.

First cold week of fall. You turn on the heat and the vents blow cool air. Is the furnace broken? πŸ₯Ά

Not always. Try these quick checks before you call anyone:

🌑️ Thermostat set to Heat, with the fan on Auto (not On). This is the most common one we see.
⏱️ Give it a minute or two. Many furnaces let the burners warm up before the blower starts.
🧻 Check the filter. A clogged one can make the furnace overheat and shut the burners off while the fan keeps blowing cool air.

If you smell gas or your CO alarm goes off, get everyone outside and call 911 from there. Don't troubleshoot that one.

All 10 causes and when to call a pro from Douglas are here πŸ‘‰ https://www.douglascoolingandheating.com/blog/furnace-not-blowing-hot-air/

When did you last change your filter? Be honest, we won't tell. πŸ˜„

One week you're running the AC, a few weeks later you're hunting for the heat on a chilly morning. Fall in Birmingham doesn't give you much warning. πŸ‚

Your system just worked through a long, humid summer, so here's a quick DIY check:

βœ… Change the air filter (a clogged one makes your system work harder)
βœ… Keep about 2 feet clear around the outdoor unit (pine straw and leaves pile up fast)
βœ… Switch the thermostat to heat on a cool evening. Warm air should come out within a few minutes
βœ… Make sure furniture and rugs aren't blocking vents

And test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, especially with gas heat or a gas fireplace.

Douglas has been helping Birmingham families stay comfortable since 1972. Booking before the first cold snap is easier than waiting until everyone in town is calling.

When was the last time you changed your filter? Be honest. πŸ˜„

First cold morning of the year. The furnace is running. The vents are blowing cold air. πŸ₯Ά

Before you panic, try this 5-minute check:

🌑️ Thermostat set to "heat" and fan on "auto" (not "on")
🧻 Hold the air filter up to a light. If you can't see light through it, replace it
πŸ”Œ Furnace power switch is on and the gas valve handle lines up with the pipe

A clogged filter can make the furnace overheat, and a safety switch shuts the burners off while the blower keeps blowing cold air.

If you smell gas, don't troubleshoot. Get everyone out and call your gas company or 911 from outside.

Pilot won't stay lit, burners clicking on and off, or water around the furnace? That's a job for a pro like us at Douglas.

Your furnace has sat unused since spring. What could have happened to it in all that time? πŸ€”

A loose vent connection, debris or an animal nest can go unnoticed all summer. And carbon monoxide has no color, no smell and no taste.

Quick safety checklist for heating season:
πŸ”” CO alarms on every level and outside sleeping areas
πŸ”§ Yearly inspection of your furnace, flues and chimney
πŸš— Never idle a car in an attached garage, even with the door open

If an alarm sounds, don't hunt for the source. Get everyone outside and call 911.
