Now that the open cut underground portion of our project in Pender is pretty well wrapped up we have moved one crew on to another project. Dyllon’s crew is now installing site utilities for a large addition at Logan View Public Schools for Hausmann Construction.

We will be installing new storm sewer mains and both installing new and relocating existing water, sewer, and irrigation lines for two new buildings on their campus. This video shows us installing 24” RCP storm sewer to drain the parking lot and an access road.

If you have ever wondered how they came up with the name of their school this video should answer that. The view of the Logan Valley is spectacular from their location, even on a hazy day.

This past week was National Trench Safety Week. This annual recognition within our industry gives us a chance to intentionally highlight trench safety and its importance on our jobsites. The highlight of the week are National Utility Contractors Association (NUCA) Trench Safety Stand Down events across the country. These events bring contractors together to stop production for a day and show the importance of safety to our employees and teach them about new products that can help protect them.

Yesterday our crews attended the NUCA of Nebraska Trench Safety Stand Down held in Wahoo. They had sessions on access and egress (getting into and out of the trench), ladder safety, rigging, and safety with cut-off saws among other topics. There was also a demonstration with a mock trench rescue performed by Lincoln Fire and Rescue. Sometimes the best way to reinforce the importance of safety is to show what happens if you aren’t safe.

There was even a little local touch on this year's Trench Safety Stand Down event as Pender’s own Bill Busch was the guest speaker and he talked about how to successfully navigate life’s turnovers.

Nothing is more important here at Penro than making sure all of our team members go home safe and healthy at the end of the day. It is our top priority and taking a day off every once in a while to show its importance is well worth it. We are fortunate to have a like minded group of contractors in our area and an association in NUCA that allows us to practice it together.

We have made a lot of progress on our project in Pender this past week. Most notably, Whitney St from 6th St to Thurston Ave was poured Wednesday. There was a significant amount of water and storm sewer work that we had to do in the intersection of 6th and Whitney to update those systems and to prepare for future drainage improvements in that area of town. The village also took advantage of government funding available for lead water service and valve replacements while we had the street removed to avoid having to remove and replace paving in the future. Those additions added about a week to our work in that area, but it is all done and paved now.

Thurston St between the park and pool should be poured next week. We have done everything we can to minimize the closure of this heavily travelled street, and we will get it back open as quickly as possible.

Our crews have moved quickly installing sewer main. All sewer main is installed along Thurston Ave to Main St. We are down to 2 ½ blocks of sewer main left to install. We will move west down Main St to Carns St, then ½ block north on Carns St. Once we have that stretch done, we should have Whitney St open to traffic and we can move back to the intersection of Whitney and Norris Streets and replace one block of sewer main south to the intersection of Norris and Maple Streets. We skipped this stretch to allow access to St Marks Lutheran Church while Whitney St was closed.

You have probably also seen light blue trucks working around town. Those trucks are televising and cleaning sewer mains in preparation for the last phase of our project. Visu-Sewer out of Pewaukee, WI will be lining the majority of sewer mains in Pender. We will have more info on that process in the coming weeks.

In all, there will be very few sewer mains in town that haven’t either been replaced or rehabilitated by this project. The only ones that aren’t are those that are those that are the most recently installed. It is a major investment by our village to ensure we have a fully functioning sewer system for generations to come.

We should have the street portion of this project wrapped up by the end of July and the rehab work will likely carry into September. Thank you for your patience as we continue work around town.

We got this great shot as our crew passed by Pender Public School this week. It was a unique opportunity to get a picture we will use for years. Our school is one of the most recognizable buildings in our home town and we are happy to have the opportunity to improve it by replacing the infrastructure around it. Several of our employees drive that street every day and now they will be able to tell their kids and grandkids that they helped build it.

Everything will be quiet on Whitney Street in Pender the next couple days, but now that school is out for the summer things are about to get busy. We will be starting up at the intersection of 6th and Whitney and move west starting Monday morning. From that intersection the new main goes west to Thurston Ave, north to Main St, west to Carns St, and ½ block north of the intersection of Main and Carns. We will also be replacing the sewer main from the intersection of Whitney and Norris south to the intersection of Norris and Maple. All of those blocks will be paved with the exception of the short stretch north of Main on Carns.

There has been a lot of progress the past two weeks, especially with street paving. Five blocks have been paved in that time. One block is fully opened, with the others opening next week. Being ahead of schedule has held us up on the installation of the sewer main along Whitney since we couldn’t close that street until school was out, but that gave us time to clean up behind us, backfill the curbs, and restore the lawns.

Please be aware of the increase in construction traffic starting Monday. Vehicle traffic will be affected most once we get to Thurston Street. Please plan accordingly and thank you for your patience.

Our crew is making great progress moving south down 6th Street in Pender. We should have our underground work done on that stretch by early next week. Our plan is still to keep access to Pender Public School on Whitney Street and we will hold off on closing that block until after school is dismissed for the year.

We will be jumping ahead and moving to the intersection of Carns Ave and Whitney Street for a couple of weeks. We will be replacing the sanitary sewer and paving for one block going west to Slaughter Street. We will keep the intersection of Whitney and Slaughter Streets open as long as possible but there will a point where we have to close the intersection for underground work and paving. During that time all traffic for east of Slaughter on Whitney (including the baseball field and Pender Sports Complex) will have to access via the Airport Road.

There will be a lot of street paving going down in town in the next two weeks. Please close attention driving and walking in or near the construction zones. There will be heavy construction traffic, especially during paving operations, along with the school traffic during that time. Please make sure kids are aware of the heavy traffic as well.

We have opened Whitney Street from 3rd to 4th Streets. Thank you to the businesses impacted by that closure for your patience and we hope traffic into your properties was improved as a result of the work.

Thank you to everyone else for your cooperation along the rest of the project so far. We know that it is inconvenient to have roads closed but the final product will more than make up for a few weeks of detours.

Things are very busy on Whitney Street today. We have the sewer main up to 6th Street installed and we’re hooking up sewer services between Hwy 9 (4th Street) and 6th Street. After all of the services are connected we will abandon the old sewer main by filling it with flowable fill concrete.

We will fix a couple of water leaks along that stretch while the paving is removed then it will be paved up to 6th Street.

Steve Harris Construction is paving Whitney Street between 3rd Street and the highway this morning. There will be some intersection work, driveways, and sidewalks to pour along that stretch then about a week for the concrete to cure before we can open it to traffic.

As always, please take extra care driving in construction zones. During times when paving is happening we can have up to 30 people working in this 3 block area. There is also a significant amount of heavy truck traffic from our crews.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation as we make our way through town.
