Even as a Master Electrician in the U.S., stepping into international work — especially in high-pressure environments — brought new lessons.
During a recent disaster relief assignment overseas, I had the opportunity to work under European wiring standards. Despite my years in the trade, there was still a slight learning curve.
The differences were clear:
⚡️ 230V systems
⚡️ Metric wire sizing
⚡️ Materials
⚡️ Panel layouts, din rails, floating neutral buss
In the U.S from homes, #14 AWG is common for lighting and 14/12 AWG for receptacles.
But in Europe…
- What’s the standard size for lighting circuits?
-How are receptacles typically wired and sized?
-Color Codes
I’d love to hear from others who’ve worked internationally or navigated IEC vs NEC standards.
