With Hurricane Isaias approaching the Gulf Coast, now is the time for commercial property owners and businesses to take a few extra steps to prepare.
Before conditions begin to deteriorate, walk the exterior of your property and secure or bring inside anything that could become airborne, including signage, furniture, trash cans, planters, and other loose items. Check exterior doors and windows, clear gutters and drains, and make sure water can move away from the building as efficiently as possible.
Inside, move important equipment, electronics, inventory, and documents away from windows and off the floor when possible. Back up important files, document the current condition of your property with photos or video, and make sure your insurance and emergency contact information is easy to access.
Business owners should also have a plan for their team. Communicate any changes to operating hours, make sure employees know who to contact if conditions change, and follow guidance from local emergency management officials.
If your property is professionally managed, contact your commercial property management team early if you notice anything that could become a larger issue during the storm, including roof or exterior damage, clogged drains, standing water, unsecured common-area items, leaks, access concerns, or other maintenance needs. It is always better to address a concern before severe weather arrives than during or after the storm.
After the storm passes and officials say it is safe to return, inspect your property carefully before reopening. Look for water intrusion, damaged roofing or exterior materials, electrical concerns, fallen debris, and other signs of damage. If you see something concerning, contact your property management team before attempting repairs yourself.
Preparation can make a significant difference in protecting your property, your business, and the people who depend on both.
