🌊🐢 Happy World Sea Turtle Day! 🐢🌊

All six sea turtle species in U.S. waters Loggerhead, Green, Kemp’s ridley, Leatherback, Hawksbill, and Olive ridley are protected under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), a federal law that helps species at risk of extinction and preserves the habitats they need to survive. As as an extension of the ESA dune ecosystems and beaches are heavily protected on a local, state, and federal level to manage coastal development and minimize disruption to sea turtle nesting. At Dune Doctors, we take pride in working with our regulatory partners to ensure every restoration project we implement reaches and exceeds permitting criteria as we continue building back the habitat that makes sea turtle nesting viable!

Heading to the beach? You can help protect nesting turtles and hatchlings:
✔️ Fill in holes & knock down sandcastles before you leave
✔️ Turn off or shield lights at night (they disorient hatchlings!)
✔️ Keep beaches clean, pick up trash and fishing line
✔️ Leave nests undisturbed & give turtles plenty of space
✔️ Take dogs to pet-friendly beaches only & keep them leashed

By following these steps you can enjoy our beautiful beaches during nesting season!

🌿 Meet Beach Vitex — A Major Threat to Our Dunes 🌿

Don't let this plant's beautiful lavender blooms fool you! Native to the western Pacific from Korea to northern Australia, the beach vitex was intentionally introduced to the US for horticultural purposes including dune stabilization. However, beach vitex has proven to be an aggressive, invasive plant that can quickly disrupt a dune ecosystem. This fast-growing plant forms thick mats that smother native plants and block sunlight.

However, its invasive power doesn't stop at the surface, it is also allelopathic meaning it sends out undergrounds runners that release chemicals killing neighboring plants. Finally, native plants are not the only victim of this invasive species. When beach vitex grows seaward it can overlap sea turtle nests, creating a hazard by trapping hatchlings underground.

🌊 What can you do?
If you see this plant, please document the location and report it to your local county's coastal resource department!

🌊🌾 Hurricane Season = Dune Building Season 🌾🌊

Hurricane season is right around the corner, and it overlaps with the peak growing season for native dune vegetation. The timing isn’t a coincidence.

🌱 Plants like sea oats and other native dune grasses grow rapidly during the warm months, helping dunes trap and hold sand right when coastal storms are most likely to occur.

Why these plants are so important:

🌾 Deep root systems stabilize the sand
💨 Stems slow the wind and capture blowing sand
🏖️ Dunes grow and recover naturally, creating stronger storm protection

How you can help protect our dunes this summer:

🚶 Stay off vegetated dunes
🪵 Use designated beach walkovers
🌱 Never remove or damage dune plants

Healthy dune vegetation helps strengthen our coast exactly when we need it most. Help protect our native, dune-stabilizing vegetation!

🐢🌊 Turtle Nesting Season Has Begun! 🌊🐢

The beaches are coming alive as sea turtle nesting season begins along the Gulf Coast! Each year, female sea turtles return to the beaches where they were born to lay their eggs, continuing a remarkable natural cycle that has existed for millions of years.

What this means for our beaches:

🥚 Nesting season is underway – Sea turtles will be coming ashore at night to dig nests and lay eggs.
🌙 Keep beaches dark – Bright lights can disorient nesting turtles and hatchlings.
🚶 Watch your step – Avoid disturbing marked nests and fragile dune areas.
🪑 Clear the beach – Remove chairs, tents, trash and obstacles each evening so turtles have a clear path.
🐕 Keep pets away – Dogs can disturb nesting turtles and hatchlings.
🐺 Prevent predators – discourage predators like racoons by keeping trash sites properly sealed and pet food out of reach

Healthy coastal dunes and native plants like sea oats help provide important habitat and protection for these incredible animals. By protecting our beaches, we help ensure future generations of turtles can continue returning home.

💚 Let’s work together to keep our beaches turtle-friendly this season!

Thank you to BBA Association Management for hosting our latest educational breakfast! We led a class on the Department of Environmental Protection's Coastal Construction Control Line Program (CCCL). Together with eleven students, we discussed regulatory boundaries that protect Florida's dune and beach ecosystems from imprudent development and poor management practices.

This outreach effort is part of Dune Doctors' educational initiative to equip CAMs with the scientific and regulatory knowledge necessary to strategically manage the native ecosystems that line and protect Gulf-front communities.

If your organization would like to partner with Dune Doctors to provide CE-credits to your staff, please reach out at 866-386-3737.

🌎🌾 Happy Earth Day from Dune Doctors!

Coastal dunes are more than just sand hills along the beach. They’re part of much larger ecosystems. Dunes help protect inland habitats from storms, provide shelter for wildlife, support native plants, and work together with the Gulf, wetlands, and barrier islands to keep our coast healthy and safe.

This Earth Day is a reminder that every action matters because all ecosystems are interconnected. From protecting native vegetation to respecting dune habitats and supporting restoration efforts like our educational initiative Planting for Protection. At Dune Doctors we believe educating Coastal Stewards of all ages in dune restoration is the key to rebuilding this critical environment.

Together, we can protect the natural systems that protect us. 🌊

🌾 Why Do Bare Spots on a Dune Matter? 🌾

At first glance, a small patch of exposed sand on a dune might not seem like a big deal — but it can have a major impact on erosion.

When areas of a dune lose their protective vegetation cover, they become vulnerable to wind and water erosion. Without plant roots to hold the sand in place, wind can quickly blow it away, and rain or storm surge can wash it away.

Over time, these bare patches can:
➡️ Expand into deeper ruts or blowouts
➡️ Weaken the overall integrity of the dune
➡️ Create pathways for water to rush through during storms, breaching the dune

Think of it like a tear in a fabric — small at first, but it can spread quickly if left unrepaired.

That’s why one of our key focuses at Dune Doctors is identifying and replanting bare areas with native vegetation with Phase 3 of the Dune Master PlanTM. Restoring these weak spots helps rebuild a dune’s natural defense system and prevents small issues from becoming big erosion problems.

If you have any bare areas on your dune, have our team evaluate your property. You can reach us directly at 866-386-3737.

🌊 Nature’s First Responders Are Hard at Work! 🌱
After a major coastal storm erodes the dune system, two incredible plants step in to rebuild the shoreline’s natural defenses.

Meet the dune restoration heroes:

🌾 Sea Oats
• Known as the backbone of coastal dunes
• Trap and stabilize sand naturally
• Root systems can spread up to 40 ft deep in all directions
• Help rebuild dunes and protect the shoreline

🌿 Panic Grass
• Blue-green pioneer plant growing alongside Sea Oats
• Stabilizes and builds coastal dunes
• Spreads seaward through nodes along its stem
• Clump-forming, growing in groups

🤝 Together, these plants jumpstart dune recovery and help rebuild protective dunes after storms.
