Summer is here…
Tips from Marks Mowing and Landscaping for keeeping your lawn looking great all summer long.

Mow Tall
Taller grass keeps the surface of the soil from drying out, reduce the need for watering, and prevents w**d seeds from germinating. Tall grass also encourages deeper root growth.

Recycle Clippings
Grass clippings are valuable organic matter, full of nitrogen and other nutrients. As long as you mow often and remove no more than 1/3 of the grass blade, you can just leave clippings on the lawn.

Fertilize
Apply an application of Milorganite und the 4th of July. A summer application of Milorganite will continue to give your lawn the nutrients it needs and will not burn your lawn even in the hottest temperatures and driest conditions.

Weeds
Remove w**ds and get the entire plant and root if possible. If w**ds have taken over, spot spray with a post emergent herbicide (avoid using during hot weather).

Water
Water deeply and infrequently in the early morning hours as needed. Your lawn requires 1” of water per week total.

Disease
Look for signs of insects, pests, and diseases in the lawn. Treat as needed.

Mole Crickets

Mole Crickets are thick, brown Grasshopper-like insects, roughly 1½ inches long, with shovel-like front legs that dig easily through soil.

Damage

Mole Crickets can damage your lawn, and sometimes flowers and vegetables, by tunneling through soil, eating roots and creating areas of dead turf that feels spongy when you walk on them. Skunks, raccoons and armadillos may dig up lawns looking for the crickets.

Location

Mole Crickets occur most heavily throughout the South, including tropical areas. They also attack lawns in the Desert Southwest, Mountain West and High Plains. Any species of grass can be damaged by Mole Crickets, but they particularly like Bahiagrass and Bermudagrass.
