air layers on a Marie Crawford camellia
Air layering is a great way to reproduce mature plants! The area is scored, treated with rooting hormone, and wrapped in peat moss, then enclosed with a layer of plastic wrap and then aluminum foil. We do most of our layering in April and May and then remove and pot up the layers in October and November.

the flower and fruit of the Barbados cherry tree

the Barbados cherry is a small subtropical tree which grows sweet and tart fruits that are packed with vitamin c. While it’s considered hardy in zone 9, it doesn’t handle hard frosts well, so if you decide to add one to your landscape you’ll want to either find a somewhat protected place or be ready to keep it small enough to cover on the coldest days
