As the days get shorter, and the temps get cooler our plants begin their process of getting ready for the upcoming winter. We see lots of panic about the first freeze each year. Some seasons Mother Nature really “rips off the Band-Aid” so to speak, but this one she has allowed for a very slow and un-eventful ease into the first cold of fall season. What does this mean for your plants? New growth will come to and end. If they haven’t already, the leaves will change color and begin to fall to the ground. Your grasses and perennials will slowly fade to their winter interest.

Does this mean the planting season is over? Absolutely not! With cooler temps, cooler soil, and no new top growth for trees, shrubs, and perennials to put energy towards, they instead focus on root growth until the ground temps get too cold. And they do this with less water requirements than spring and summer. Late October and through November is a great time to add to your landscape. Don’t let the pumpkin spice everything and Christmas displays at the box stores fool you into missing an opportune time to get new trees and shrubs in the ground.

It’s also when we get the nursery ready for next season, and you can find some great deals on trees we are long on. Right now, there is a good list of trees that are 20% off through the end of this month, and possibly into November. All our perennials are buy 3, get 3 FREE while they last. With summer temperatures climbing, newly planted trees, shrubs, and flowers need a little extra attention to stay healthy.

Watch for heat stress: Wilting, curling, yellowing, or scorched leaves are signs your plants may be struggling.
