Our Arch Madness winner: 1501 Fairmount Ave 🎉
Thank you to everyone who followed along and voted.
This five-story mixed-use project preserves the historic façade along Fairmount Avenue and North 15th Street, while introducing new ground-floor commercial space, and 32 residential units. Brown corrugated metal, fiber cement panel, and red-patterned brick shape the exterior palette, with the use of metal paying homage to the site’s historic use as an automobile shop.
The proposed windows are organized in vertical bays to relate to the historic storefront, building off the rhythm of the existing bays and the verticality of the tower. The use of brick along Swain Street and 15th Street connects the project to the surrounding residential context, while the new construction is set back to prevent over-shadowing the historic structure.
We’re excited to see this project recognized as this year’s Arch Madness winner. It’s a strong example of how thoughtful design can respond to history, context, and preservation while establishing a new presence in the neighborhood.
