Ground Reconsidered is a landscape architecture studio dedicated to realizing engaging, beautiful and memorable places. The firm has successfully designed and executed projects that range in scope from comprehensive master plans to the creation of intimate landscapes and the detail design of site elements. By responding to site context and client input our work transforms landscapes, enhancing the

built projects within them and assuring continuity with the existing environment. We take a holistic view of the site and context our projects inhabit and work to understand geological, hydrological and vegetative conditions as well as the human needs of each location. Our designs respond to visual and physical cues from the environment as well as to the meaning and purpose a place has to its users.

With gratitude and warm wishes we announce the retirement of our principal and friend, Karen Skafte. The landscapes she has shaped across the region stand as a testament to her vision and her hard work. We are going to miss Karen’s wisdom, kindness, humor, and exceptional design sensibilities in the studio. However, we are overjoyed that she is finally taking time for herself. After a lifetime of hard work, she deserves a retirement filled with family, travel, hobbies, and happiness. Congratulations, Karen, on an incredible career!

GR recently took some time out of the office for a construction tour of Paine Plaza! Walking the site, we talked about the collaborative efforts that shaped both the big picture and the little details of the project. Our design reimagines this formerly underutilized expanse of hardscape as a place that is accessible, verdant, vibrant, and usable, while holding space for skateboarding and democratic civic expression.
