The airline made a mistake. The baggage handlers made a mistake. Somebody dropped the ball.

But here’s the thing…

Mistakes happen.

In business, we’re all going to dent a suitcase, miss a detail, forget a step, or disappoint a customer at some point. The companies that win aren’t the ones that never make mistakes. They’re the ones that own them, fix them, and learn from them.

Customers are usually pretty forgiving when you take responsibility.

What they don’t forgive is excuses, finger-pointing, or pretending the problem doesn’t exist.

Character isn’t revealed when everything goes right.

Character is revealed when something goes wrong.

The mistake may not be your fault, but how you handle it is always your responsibility.

That’s where trust is built.

That’s where reputations are earned.

And that’s where good companies separate themselves from great ones. 💪

One of my favorite parts of running service calls has nothing to do with electrical work.

Customers have some seriously cool stuff.

Today I came across this old Schwinn display hanging in a garage. Most techs would walk right past it. I stopped and asked about it. That simple conversation turned into a story, and that story turned into trust.

The best salespeople aren’t always the best talkers. They’re the best listeners.

Every home has clues. Pictures, trophies, motorcycles, old signs, classic cars, collectibles. People love sharing the things they’re passionate about. When you slow down long enough to notice, you stop being “the electrician” and start becoming someone they enjoy having in their home.

People buy from people they like.
People like people who take a genuine interest in them.

The next time you’re on a service call, look around. The panel might need attention, but so does the person who owns it.

You never know what cool story is hanging on the wall. 🚲⚡️

Most people don’t have a work ethic problem.

They have a direction problem.

Imagine lining up for a race without knowing where the finish line is. You’d run hard, get tired, make turns, second guess yourself, and eventually wonder why you’re exhausted with nothing to show for it.

That’s how a lot of people live.

They wake up, go to work, stay busy, and put out fires all day long. Then they wonder why they aren’t getting where they want to go.

Before you start running, define the finish line.

What does success look like?
How much money do you want to make?
What kind of life are you building?
What skills do you need?
What does the next year look like?

Busy isn’t the same as productive.

Stop wandering.
Stop hoping.
Stop waiting for someone else to point the way.

Pick a destination. Build a plan. Then put your head down and go.

A bad plan with a clear destination will beat no plan every single time.

Know where you’re going before you start running. The finish line determines every step that comes after it. 💪🏁

The Road Less Traveled

Most people want different results, but they keep driving down the same road everyone else is on.

The road less traveled isn’t always glamorous. It’s early mornings, long flights, missed comforts, hard conversations, and doing the work when nobody is watching.

It’s betting on yourself when there’s no guarantee it’ll work.

It’s leaving behind excuses and taking ownership of where you’re headed.

The funny thing is, when you’re on the road less traveled, it can feel lonely at times. But eventually, you realize that’s because not everyone is willing to make the trip.

Every opportunity I’ve had, every lesson I’ve learned, and every bit of growth I’ve experienced came from taking a path that wasn’t crowded.

Keep going!

The road may be long, but so is the view.

Descriptions Sell.

I was reading a breakfast menu this morning and it hit me.

Nobody writes:

“French toast - $14.79”

Instead they write:

“Thick-cut, custard-dipped, griddled challah bread topped with almond butter crème anglaise, caramelized bananas, fresh blueberries, lemon whipped cream, honey roasted almonds…”

Same food.

Different value.

Most technicians make the same mistake on estimates.

They write:

❌ Change outlet

Instead, write:

✅ Remove and replace one white decorative duplex receptacle with a white standard-size unbreakable wall plate. Verify proper operation and secure all connections.

Or:

❌ Install surge protector

✅ Supply and install a whole-home surge protection device designed to help protect sensitive electronics and appliances from damaging voltage spikes and power fluctuations.

Or:

❌ Replace water heater

✅ Remove existing water heater and install a new high-efficiency water heating system complete with all necessary fittings, safety devices, startup, testing, and disposal of old equipment.

The funny thing is the work didn’t change.

The value didn’t change.

Only the description changed.

When customers compare estimates, they’re often comparing words before they’re comparing prices.

One estimate says “change outlet.”

The other paints a picture of exactly what they’re getting.

Details create confidence.
Confidence creates value.
Value creates sales.

Stop writing estimates like a grocery list.
Start writing them like a menu. 🍳💰
