Crafted specifically for the presentation of Calder’s work, the landscape and architecture of Calder Gardens unfolds as a choreographed progression that moves visitors from a hectic cityscape to a more contemplative realm.

Discreetly nestled into the landscape, the building is sheathed in softly reflective metal cladding that blurs the boundaries between architecture and the natural world.

Calder Gardens is a cultural destination dedicated to the work of native Philadelphian artist Alexander Calder. Featuring galleries illuminated by natural light, in a structure ensconced in a flowing landscape of native species, Calder Gardens presents a rotating selection of masterworks curated by the Calder Foundation. As Executive Architect and Structural Engineer of Record, Ballinger played a pivotal role in bringing the design vision to life.

Ballinger served as a crucial intermediary between the renowned Swiss Design Architect, Herzog & de Meuron (HdM), and the practical realities of building codes and constructability, while navigating the dynamic interplay of stakeholder priorities. The project reflects Ballinger’s strengths in interdisciplinary coordination and technical expertise. Our team orchestrated the ex*****on of HdM’s sophisticated design vision, ensuring both functional and aesthetic aspirations were met, in a context where every detail matters.

The City of Philadelphia Riverview Wellness Village is a multi-phased project within Philadelphia’s Wellness Ecosystem Initiative. The final phase will bring the total to 604 beds and introduce expanded interior and exterior amenities. It represents a historic effort to bring new focus, collaboration, and resources to address the entrenched challenges of substance use disorder and homelessness.

By renovating existing buildings rather than constructing new ones, the City of Philadelphia Riverview Wellness Village avoided the significant carbon output associated with demolition and new construction. Reuse reduced the need for manufacturing and transporting carbon-intensive materials while also accelerating the delivery schedule and maximizing value for the city.

The City of Philadelphia Riverview Wellness Village site – 19 acres along the Delaware River in Northeast Philadelphia – has provided housing for underserved populations since the 1800s. Expanded in 1964, the campus was an early example of biophilic design, with skylights to bring in natural light and easily accessible outdoor areas. Ballinger’s renovation of four cottages and the central meeting house created 204 beds, advancing the city’s ability to support people in recovery.

Kearney Regional Medical Center and Cancer Partners of Nebraska Partners of Nebraska celebrated the opening of Kearney Cancer Center, designed by Ballinger.

Located in Kearney, Nebraska, the 25,000 SF building centralizes cancer care services in a tranquil environment, easing stress for patients and families by reducing travel to specialists. Combining cutting-edge technology, imaging, and laboratory services, plus access to clinical trials, the center offers early detection and advanced treatments for cancer, as well as wraparound services like mastectomy fittings.

The center will open to patients this fall.

The University of Rochester Medical Center Golisano Children’s Hospital lobby is split vertically and horizontally to allow for a dedicated children’s lobby separate from the main hospital entrance. The light-filled space welcomes families and includes access to two healing gardens. A theming program throughout the new building combines wayfinding with recognizable images from the region it serves – lake, meadow, glen, garden, park, city, and sky. The graphics help families remember which floor they’re on, and provide creative opportunities to interact with children.

Designed by Ballinger, the experience of the pediatric patient is the primary focus of every element in the University of Rochester Medical Center's Golisano Children’s Hospital. A standalone pediatric facility as well as an integral part of the existing Strong Memorial Hospital, the eight-story building supports the hospital’s mission to provide state-of-the-art care.

In a traditional design process, furniture selection takes place after a new space is designed and mostly independently from architectural considerations. This can result in a disjointed aesthetic, functional inefficiencies, and increased cost. Most of all, it’s a missed opportunity.

As a design practice with in-house interior designers, architects, and engineers, Ballinger champions a collaborative design methodology that simultaneously considers all aspects of the environment from the outset.
