Day 44 — “Why not add UV or copper?” 🤔💧

We kinda already do.

It’s called ☀️ the Sun.

Every day, UV radiation is hitting the water while the biofilter and natural microbiome do the rest.

Then there’s copper.

Copper has developed a bit of a mythical reputation in the pool industry.

Yes, copper can have antimicrobial properties, but you’d need enough of it to matter, and then you’d have to worry about copper staining, green hair, metal buildup, and disrupting the very microbiome we’re trying to cultivate.

Natural pools don’t rely on UV.

Natural pools don’t rely on copper.

Natural pools rely on biology.

Today’s graphic from The Definitive Guide to Natural Pools shows the nitrogen cycle that powers every healthy freshwater ecosystem:

🌱 Producers (algae, phytoplankton, microorganisms) capture sunlight and nutrients.

🦠 Consumers (zooplankton, protozoa, insects, microorganisms) consume organic matter and other organisms.

🍂 Decomposers break everything back down into usable nutrients.

Round and round it goes.

The same cycle that supports lakes, rivers, wetlands, ponds, coral reefs, and life itself.

Compare that to the chemical cycle:

⛏️ Mining
🏭 Manufacturing
📦 Packaging
🚚 Shipping
🏪 Retail stores
🏡 Your backyard
🗑️ Disposal

Then repeat forever.

One system relies on nature.

The other relies on a supply chain.

Which one sounds more sustainable to you? 👀

People on the internet: “That’ll never work.”

Me: holding a bucket of crystal-clear water in 100 degree weather 😂💧

Do what makes you happy.

Would you swim in it?

Day 43 — Most people think algae starts in the pool. They’re wrong. 👀 🦠

We’re finally done moving boulders, the retaining wall is taking shape, and the wood chips and mulch are down.

Why does that matter?

Because for the last 43 days, this yard has mostly been bare dirt.

Every time the wind blew, dust and nutrients were getting carried into the pool.

And what does algae eat?

Nutrients. Phosphorus. Nitrogen. Dissolved Organic Matter.

Now that we’ve covered the dirt and stabilized the landscape, we’ll have dramatically less dirt blowing into the water.

That means:

✅ Less nutrients entering the pool
✅ Less algae clinging to surfaces
✅ Less maintenance
✅ Even clearer water

Remember, this biofilter is still in its first year and contains 16,000 pounds of crushed limestone gravel. Even after screening, the gravel comes with dirt and fines trapped inside.

That’s why every backwash makes the system cleaner and more stable.

By the second and third backwash, most natural pools become noticeably clearer and easier to maintain.

The coolest part?

Our new backwash line wraps around the property so every 3–6 months we’ll use the nutrient-rich backwash water to irrigate, fertilize, and build healthy soil instead of sending it down the drain.

The pool feeds the landscape.

The landscape protects the pool.

Everything works together. 🌎💧

If you’ve been following this journey and imagining a natural pool in your own backyard, now is the time to start planning.

Called out of work.

Buy once. Cry once. 😂

Or buy the cheapest bid and cry every time something breaks.

“Can you match this guy’s price?”

Sure.

Can he match my warranty, engineering, permits, experience, and phone number when things go wrong? 👀
