Day 111 — Why doesn’t our natural swimming pool look like a typical swim pond? 🌿💧
When I first started looking for a chemical-free swimming pool for my own backyard, that’s exactly what I discovered.
Most natural swimming pools I found had a traditional design: a swimming area surrounded by a large planted regeneration zone.
And while those systems are beautiful and absolutely work, I had a problem…
I didn’t have the space.
And there was something else I didn’t love about the traditional design.
The swimming area and regeneration zone are often connected as one body of water.
So every time you jump in, swim, or create waves, you’re potentially disturbing the biological ecosystem—mixing dirt, debris, biofilm, and algae from the regeneration zone back into the swimming area.
Then in 2018, I discovered BioNova.
They had developed the BF4 Biofilm Reactor: a deep-bed gravel biological filter designed to be completely separate from the swimming pool.
That changed everything for me.
I could design the pool around my backyard and how my family actually wanted to use it—instead of designing our entire backyard around a massive regeneration zone.
The swimming pool stays a swimming pool.
The biological filtration happens separately.
And if we want plants? We can still have them.
If we want a planted regeneration zone? We can combine one with the BF4.
That’s what I love most about natural swimming pools:
There isn’t just one way to build them.
You can create a natural pool that looks like a wild swimming pond…
Or one that looks and feels almost exactly like a traditional backyard pool.
The best design is the one that fits your property, your family, and how you actually want to live.
And that’s exactly why we offer custom natural swimming pool designs worldwide.
We can also convert existing pools to NSP’s!
