It's Officially Beach Season…and Baby Bird Season Too!

Since 2016, Vernadero biologists have been conducting protocol-level surveys for federally endangered and threatened avian species, including nest searches for the California least tern (Sternula antillarum browni) and western snowy plover (Charadrius alexandrinus nivosus). Our surveyors document detection locations, breeding status, and approximate age and s*x of each individual bird observed. Tracking hatching success and breeding patterns is critical to understanding whether conservation efforts are truly making a difference and ensuring these species have a future.

Do Your Part to Protect Them

Many families will take beach vacations this summer, but beach weather also means it is officially baby bird season. Several shorebird species nesting along the beaches are endangered or threatened, and a few simple precautions can make a real difference:

• Adhere to beach rules for your safety and theirs.
• Stay on walking paths when available to reach the water’s edge.
• Watch for restricted areas or marked nesting areas and avoid them.
• Pick up all trash and dispose of it properly as it can attract predators.
• Bring pets only to beaches designated for pets.

Welcome to the Vernadero team Amy, Quinton, Travis, and Victoria!

Amy Coppola – Amy has a diverse background in natural and cultural resources management, conducting pedestrian surveys, and developing reports for projects throughout the western United States and in Saudi Arabia. Amy has worked across a wide range of project types, including federal land surveys, pipeline construction, border barrier monitoring, and military base assessments.

Dr. Quinton Butler – Quinton has a background in geospatial sciences, survey data management, and environmental research, with proficiency in GIS analysis, data collection and reporting, and federal project management.

Travis Thompson – Travis has expertise in biological research, environmental consulting, and regulatory compliance, with a background in freshwater ecology, fish and wildlife surveys, hydrology, and habitat management across federal, commercial, and research sectors.

Victoria Faz – Victoria has experience in environmental science, hazardous materials management, and regulatory compliance, with extensive hands-on experience in water treatment operations, air and soil monitoring, disaster response, and remediation projects .

Triston is an Ecologist with a background in animal behavior, conservation, and ecosystem management with a strong focus on desert tortoise and rattlesnake research. Triston has worked across a range of field and laboratory settings including zoonotic disease research, amphibian surveys and monitoring, genetic sampling, aquatic exotic species eradication, and biological sample collection.
