One of the things I love about working on a Ralph Haver home is that the house already knows what it wants to be. The challenge is listening carefully enough not to get in its way.

For this Windemere home, the owners wanted more privacy, more shade, and better opportunities to live outdoors, but they did not want to hide the architecture or lose the openness that makes the house special.

The design grew from a series of thoughtful moves. A low wall defines the front yard while a flowering trellis adds privacy without closing it off. Mesquite trees provide shade where it matters. The landscape softens the transition from the street, and overlooked areas around the house become comfortable places to gather, dine, and relax.

The result is not a reinvention of the home. It is a continuation of the ideas that were already there, adapted for how its owners live today.

This was my office for the morning, and what an office it was.

It is truly a privilege to help the owners of a historic Phoenix home examine its past while considering the needs of modern life and planning thoughtfully for its future.

Every window, tile, fireplace, and piece of original hardware has a story to tell. Our work begins by listening, understanding what makes the home special before imagining what comes next.

Getting to do this alongside some of the most talented and passionate design minds in the Valley makes the experience even more meaningful.

Tonight, the Sonoran Desert put on one of those shows that stops you in your tracks.

From our own yard, we watched monsoon storms gather along the edge of the Valley, turning the sky into layers of charcoal, copper, amber, and blue. The rain remained in the distance, but the storm transformed everything around us.

That is part of what makes the desert so extraordinary. It can feel vast and still, then suddenly come alive with movement, light, and weather.

For JAD Design Services, evenings like this are a reminder that meaningful design begins by paying attention to place: the heat, shade, wind, water, horizon, and constantly changing desert sky.

For The Traveling Husbands, they remind us that wonder does not always require a plane ticket. Sometimes it is waiting just beyond the back door.

This is home: wild, resilient, dramatic, and never the same twice. 🌵⛈️

Architecture is its own language.

Architects spend years learning to read plans. We see walls, circulation, scale, relationships, and spatial possibilities in what may look like a collection of lines to someone else.

But clients should not need an architecture degree to meaningfully participate in the design process.

New tools, including iterative AI-assisted imagery, can help translate technical drawings into views that are easier to understand. These images allow clients to see how spaces connect, imagine how they might feel, and provide more meaningful feedback.

They are not construction documents, and AI can introduce interpretations that must be recognized and managed. Their real value is in fostering conversation.

Better understanding leads to better questions, more confident decisions, and ultimately a stronger design.

At JAD Design Services, we are exploring how emerging tools can make design communication more understandable, collaborative, and accessible.

Some of my favorite spaces aren’t the most expensive, the newest, or even the most architecturally significant.

They’re the ones that tell a story.

Walking into Hula’s or Captain’s Cabin isn’t simply entering a restaurant or a bar. It’s stepping into a carefully crafted world where lighting, texture, music, artifacts, materials, and even the scent in the air work together to transport you somewhere else. Every detail has a role to play.

That’s what great placemaking does.

As architects and designers, we often talk about function, code, sustainability, and budgets. Those things matter. But so does emotion. So does wonder. So does giving people permission to slow down, gather, imagine, and belong.

The best spaces don’t simply accommodate life. They shape memories.

Whether it’s a centuries-old village in the Cotswolds, a neighborhood park, or a tucked-away tiki bar, thoughtful design has the power to tell stories long before anyone speaks a word.

That’s the kind of architecture I’ll always admire.

What happens when a renovation begins by asking what is worth keeping?

This concept started with an existing slump block home and a simple goal: create more light, more height, and a stronger connection between the house and the landscape without erasing everything that was already there.

Rather than covering up the original masonry, the design uses it as the grounded base of the new architecture. A raised roof, clerestory glazing, and a more dramatic central pavilion create volume and daylight, while the warmer materials and deep overhangs keep the house rooted in the desert.

The result is a home that feels completely transformed, but not disconnected from its past.

That is always one of the most interesting parts of renovation design. The best ideas are not always about starting over. Sometimes they come from recognizing the value already built into a place, then giving it a new way to live.

We lost count of how many times I stopped to take a photo while wandering through the villages of the Cotswolds.

At first, I thought I was photographing the architecture.

Then I realized I wasn’t.

I was photographing the conversation between the architecture and the landscape.

The honey-colored stone seems to rise from the earth itself. Ivy climbs walls that have welcomed it for generations. Gardens spill onto pathways, streams reflect centuries-old cottages, and church spires quietly emerge above the trees.

Nothing feels forced. Nothing demands attention.

The buildings occupy this beautiful liminal space between the earth, the plants, and the sky. Rather than competing with nature, they celebrate it. They invite it in.

As architects, we’re often taught to think of buildings as objects. But the Cotswolds offer a different lesson. Here, architecture isn’t the protagonist. It belongs to something larger. The landscape, the light, the seasons, and the buildings all exist as one continuous composition.

Perhaps that’s why these villages feel so timeless.

The best architecture doesn’t always ask to be noticed.

Sometimes, it simply belongs.

ON THE BOARDS | SCOTTSDALE MID-CENTURY REMODEL

A mid-century remodel and addition in Scottsdale, shaped to build on the character of the original home rather than compete with it.

The design extends the home’s low, horizontal composition through broad roof planes, deep overhangs, clerestory glazing, warm wood accents, and a stronger connection between the interior, courtyard, and desert landscape.

These early conceptual studies explore proportion, material transitions, light, and the experience of moving through the new spaces while keeping the design process open, collaborative, and conversational.

The project is being developed in collaboration with Joel Contreras Design as Lead Designer, with JAD Design Services supporting the work through construction documentation, consultant coordination, and permitting.
