Three materials. Three different jobs in the backyard.

Artificial turf establishes a comfortable, usable green zone. Paver borders create separation and keep the different landscape surfaces visually organized, while gravel provides practical coverage throughout the surrounding areas.

What makes the combination work is the transition between them, where the turf ends, how the pavers frame the space, and how the gravel connects everything without competing for attention.

That balance of function, material placement, and proportion is what turns separate landscape features into one cohesive backyard.

A small turf area can completely change how a yard functions.

Artificial turf was used here as a defined green space, with a paver border creating a clean transition between the turf and surrounding rock landscape.

The result is a more intentional use of the yard without overcomplicating the design.

Large properties require smarter material choices.

In Cave Creek, Arizona, where properties can span one or two acres, covering more ground efficiently was a key part of this landscape plan.

For the larger areas, we installed 3/8” Madison Gold, providing broad coverage without the dustier characteristics of finer quarter-minus material.

For the driveway, we used quarter-minus decomposed granite, compacted multiple times to create a smoother, stable surface designed for vehicle traffic. Riprap along the perimeter helps define the driveway and separate the surrounding landscape.

Different areas have different demands. Choosing the right material for each application is what makes a large-property landscape work.

This backyard was designed around more than appearance. It was designed around how the homeowner will use it every day.

For this project in Avondale, Arizona, wheelchair accessibility shaped the plan from the beginning.

Our team is installing four-foot-wide paver walkways that connect to an extended backyard patio, creating comfortable space to maneuver throughout the property.

With approximately 800 sq. ft. of pavers, artificial turf and gravel completing the landscape, every element has a purpose.
