As children we construct private places from blankets, branches and boxes; we find importance in having our own space - the same type of spaces necessary over one’s life. Pla

ces fun to explore; places where we find intimacy and repose; places to bring friends and family, places to laugh, dine, places to welcome and say good-bye. Places of experience. Models for planting designs come from the bold and powerful landscapes in nature. Simplicity and repetition of the right plants in the right places create harmony, serenity, and embrace change. Trees and shrubs are used to frame and modify views, compress space and seat homes gracefully in a landscape. As in nature, bold and powerful drifts of grasses and flowering perennials redefine the grand beauty of nature and what it teaches us. This artful approach to design bridges the gap between those who embrace wildness and those who desire order. My personal experience began in our family plant nursery where I first noticed the beauty of meadows and woodlands. Later working alongside well respected architects I learned the power of thoughtfully developed places. I hope to inspire others to the excitement that strong architectural spaces combined with dramatic planting can have. Our lifes work is to be productive partners in the community and inspire future generations. It’s truly a great honor to be given opportunities to build beautiful, healthy livable places.

Movement is one of the most subtle ways a garden can completely change throughout the day.

The delicate blooms of Muhlenbergia capillaris, or pink muhly grass, catch even the slightest breeze, creating a soft haze of pink that shifts with the light and brings another layer of movement to the garden.

Join us on Saturday, October 17 for a special Open Day with The Garden Conservancy, offering the opportunity to tour Donald Pell’s private studio gardens in Phoenixville, PA.

Since 2008, this 14 acre farm has evolved into a series of naturalistic gardens shaped by plants, place, and the New American style. Explore the Farmhouse Garden, Oval, and woodland gardens while experiencing the plant combinations, sweeping perennial plantings, and thoughtful design that define the landscape.

Editing a garden doesn’t always mean making a major change. Sometimes, it’s about noticing where a small adjustment can make the planting feel more intentional.

By selectively cutting back the Deschampsia, we can open up the bed, reveal more of the Amsonia, and create smaller moments of texture throughout the planting rather than one continuous wall of inflorescence.

Small edits can completely change how we experience a garden while still allowing each plant to have its moment.

Sometimes, the best thing we can give a garden is time.

Sesleria autumnalis may not have loved its first hot, dry Pennsylvania summer, but with patience and a shift in how it was managed, it has adapted beautifully. By allowing its own herbaceous tissue to break down and act as mulch, the soil has improved and the plants are now thriving through the heat of summer.

A good reminder that working with plants isn’t always about doing more. Sometimes it’s about observing, adapting, and letting natural processes do the work.

‘Millenium’ Allium

Within the last few weeks, not only but in our gardens in Phoenixville, but in our clients gardens, the ‘Millenium’ Alliums have been absolutely covered with an assortment of bees and pollinators. The sound is absolutely incredible, the gentle hums of all of the insects together create such an impact. It’s truly a sight, and sound, to see.

Patience in the gardens.

Not every problem needs to be solved the moment we notice it. Sometimes all a garden asks of us is a little more time.
On this morning, I found myself looking at a planting I’d questioned for years. Instead of seeing something untidy, I saw movement, texture, and character that I hadn’t appreciated before.
Gardens have a way of reminding us that growth can’t always be rushed. Sometimes the most meaningful change happens when we choose not to intervene at all.
