Pickens County—it’s time to get serious about preparation. Anyone remember the ice storm in Dec 2005? Ice weighed down tree limbs, caused them to snap, lead to power lines down, and resulted in widespread, long-lasting power outages.
Key prep tips for staying safe at home:
• Secure a non-electric heat source right away—like a propane heater (used safely with ventilation), wood stove, or kerosene heater. Have plenty of fuel and follow all safety guidelines to avoid carbon monoxide risks.
• Plan ways to heat food and water without electricity: stock up on canned goods, a camp stove or grill (for outdoor use only), manual can opener, and extra batteries for flashlights/radios.
• Test your generator NOW if you have one—make sure it runs, you have fresh fuel (stored safely), and know how to hook it up properly. Never run it indoors or near windows/doors due to CO poisoning.
• Stock essentials: bottled water, non-perishable food for several days, medications, blankets, battery-powered lights/radio, first-aid kit, and cash (ATMs/card readers may not work).
• Charge all devices and power banks. Limit travel if conditions worsen—roads could become hazardous quickly.
