Previously posted the removal of a perennial bed in order to save time maintenance. Rock beds still require weeding even with fabric underlayment. In most cases weeds germinate in the rock it self. Rock beds in this location will be where snow is piled. Over time these areas collect soil, and will need to be washed periodically. The appearance of rock beds can be softened with plant material. One or two shubs or trees can make a difference and still preserve the low maintenance intent.

Before and after. Focused maintenance, we took out an established perennial bed as it required weekly attention pulling weeds. Rock mulch doesn't completely remove maintenence, but it's easier to spray weeds once a month than spending your Saturdays pulling weeds.

When to plant your garden. After Mother's day. This advice was given to me by someone who is actually successful at growing one. This year will be different, this time I'll be successful. Lucy will hold the football, (out-dated quotes also free of charge).

When to start your irrigation system. It has finally rained so the urgency is curtailed. I recommend after May 1. Specially on May 1 I'll check the extended forcast and if I dont see daily low temps below 35, then it's time. If weekly precipitation doesnt exceed 1" let the irrigation system run. This will build up soil moisture prior to the hot temps coming in June.

Booking spring work now. Projects to consider for spring: irrigation systems new or updating. Cutting back the overgrowth along sidewalks and driveways. Cleaning out planting beds and starting bedding and garden plant seed trays.

If you haven't yet, it is time to remove the thatch. This does not have to involve power raking, in most cases it's not necessary and slightly detrimental. Just bagging the clippings will suffice. This allows the lawn grass to get a jump on the weeds. A healthy lawn is always the best deterrent broad leaves. The warm temperatures have initiated broad leaves in the planting beds along the foundation. Forcast for precipitation end of next week, consider spreading an application of pre-emergent.

False spring, what I call it, has started. Lawn grass has started in full light areas. Time to clean up the remaining leaves. Lower the mower deck and remove the thatch.

February, time to contemplate spring tree planting. Why spring? It is when bare root stock is available. This type transplant is the most cost efficient. Tree planting is one element you should never wait upon. Contact me for free estimate and details.

He hadn't stopped Christmas from coming! It came!
Somehow or other, it came just the same!

And the Grinch, with his grinch feet ice-cold in the snow,
Stood puzzling and puzzling. "How could it be so?

It came without ribbons! It came without tags!
It came without packages, boxes, or bags!"

He puzzled and puzzed till his puzzler was sore.
Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before.

Maybe Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store.
Maybe Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more!
