Coming Wednesday June 24, 12-1pm
Lunch and Learn: Who are the Pollinators?

Establish pollinator gardens, support pollinators, but who are those pollinators? There are big efforts to support pollinators, but often we only think about a handful of pollinators or know them by name. Pollinators are a diverse category of life. Bring your lunch and join Quincy Sadowski, University of Minnesota Extension Educator, to learn more about our native pollinators.

Wisteria - a Feast for Your Eyes!

The University of Minnesota developed the first
wisteria proven hardy to zone three. Summer
Cascade™ was bred from a hardy strain of Kentucky
wisteria. This beautiful flowering vine thrives in full
sun, and can easily cover your wooden structures as
it has our pergola.

Carefully consider where to place a new wisteria as
it can be an aggressive grower. A fence, arbor or
trellis must be able to accommodate some weight,
as the woody vine will become heavy.
During blooming season, your garden might
become a buzzing haven for bees and butterflies; it
also offers refuge to wildlife. Birds may nest within
its branches, finding shelter and sustenance. It’s a
magnet for pollinators.

Plant in full sun in fertile, moist but well-draining.
Wisteria’s scientific name is Wisteria macrostachya
'Betty Matthews' sold as Summer Cascade™.

There are Asian cultivars available but they tend to
grow aggressively. The Minnesota cultivars are
descended from an eastern United States variety
that will not take over your garden.

Some advice for watering your trees from MN DNR:
Your trees are thirsty. Newly planted trees need 15–25 gallons of water once a week for the first 3–5 years.
Help them beat the heat:
💧Set a hose on a slow trickle for 1–2 hours, rotating it around the tree every 20 minutes or so.
💧Use a 5-gallon bucket to slowly pour water around the base.
💧Use a tree watering bag and refill it as needed.
Also remember to mulch properly — about 3 inches deep in a donut shape, keeping mulch away from the trunk.
Watering once a week during hot, dry spells is one of the easiest ways to reduce stress on trees and help them thrive.
