Did you know that the state of California will PAY you to remove your lawn (or a portion, if it's a honker like this one)? They will. But you must plant it with drought tolerant plants, and not just pave over it.
There is still money available if you're interested in doing this. This landscape was an example of a turf replacement. Yes, the plants need water during their first summer until they are established, but eventually, this landscape will need little to no water. Plus, it looks a LOT better than the scraggly grass. And it's pollinator friendly. :) This was done a bit cheaper than a usual landscape of this size, but it's still gonna be a beaut.

If you're interested in the state rebates, you can look at the info here: http://saveourwater.com/blog-posts/state-announces-rebates-to-replace-toilets-turf/

Native plants are particularly well adapted to your areas (and are drought tolerant).

Been awhile since I checked in here!! Two Green Thumbs has been busy tidying up gardens all over Humboldt County. We're getting ready to do a couple small installations this month too!

In the meantime, Spring has sprung in Humboldt!! The slugs and snails are out in full force, so don't forget to liberally apply some Sluggo (or Lily Miller's worry free slug bait) to your newly planted veggie starts (especially PEAS - they LOVE peas). It's past time to spray dormant oil on your fruit trees, since most have broken bud by now, but keep an eye out for pests.

The days are getting shorter, but we still have plenty of warm weather before the rains come. Now is the time to start thinking about planting your Fall garden. Wait until late September or October before planting garlic, but you can put in leafy greens, brassicas, and direct sow beets, carrots, and radishes. The nurseries are starting to put their annuals on sale, so they can clear out some of this year's stock. Why not add a little color to your garden or yard as well? Make sure to water deeply, when you do water. The ground is parched, and it takes a while to get the water to the roots. Drip irrigation is best for this if you can swing it, because it puts water only where the plant needs it (and not all over the rest of the landscape/yard, where it will encourage weeds to sprout).

The garden is finally filling out. This is an excellent example of a bee friendly landscape.

The lack of rain and abundant sunshine have many plants and trees confused these days. Ornamental trees that don't normally bloom until February are in bloom now. In addition, fruit trees are starting to bud out. If you haven't pruned your fruit trees yet, it's time! Ideally, you would have hit the trees with the first spray of dormant oil a couple weeks ago, when the last of the leaves dropped. Two more sprays will help prevent disease and major pest problems. A simple dormant oil will suffice, and for scab and peach leaf curl, Serenade (a biological treatment that is approved for organic gardening) is also a good idea.

It may finally get above freezing tonight, for the first night in a week. Many, MANY plants have bitten it due to the hard freezes. Fuchsias, Princess flowers, many salvias, Meyer lemon trees, etc. You may be tempted to prune off the dead parts, but don't do it!! Those dead branches/leaves are the only thing protecting the plant at this point. Wait until our danger of freezing is over (yes, it means you'll have some ugly plants in your landscape for a few months), and *then* you can prune them.

Well, that rain was a bit unexpected, wasn't it? That much rain this early in the season? I suppose it's only fair, since our rains pretty much dried up in late April. Who knows what this winter will bring! But warmer weather is forecast for the rest of the week, so it's time to get out into the garden and get those Fall crops planted! Garlic, onion sets, many kinds of greens, and even peas can be planted now. I just planted 10 rows of garlic, and will do more next week.

Baby, it's cold out there! No doubt some of the plants in your landscape have been blasted by our very cold temps. Resist the urge to prune them now! The dead parts will protect the rest of the plant. Wait until our freezing temps are well over (say, April) before pruning off the dead portions. Your plants will thank you.
