Lacey Lee is the owner of Mold Dog of Virginia, where she works alongside her unique business partner—her certified mold detection dog, Rudy. Using the extraordinary power of his nose, Rudy is trained to detect mold, both active and inactive, helping identify mold that is often hidden behind walls, in ceilings, under floors, and in places the human eye cannot see.

Together, they inspect homes and businesses, providing a non-invasive way to locate mold and help property owners understand what may be affecting their indoor environment.

Lacey’s work is deeply personal. Mold Dog of Virginia was born out of her own battle with toxic mold exposure and the difficult journey of finding answers and solutions. Having been in her clients’ shoes, Lacey brings both empathy and determination to every inspection, committed to helping others uncover the truth about mold in their homes and workplaces.

Thank you Lacey for taking the time out of your busy schedule to be a guest on the podcast. We look forward to collaborating for future projects. A link to the video is in the comments.

Big news: I'm speaking at the Healthy Home Summit, and I'd love for you to join me! 🙌

This is a free, online event bringing together 20+ environmental health experts and I'll be covering one of the topics I care most about: what actually works when it comes to mold testing and remediation.

My session: "Mycotoxins, Mold Testing, and Remediation: What Actually Works"

I'll walk through the testing options that give you real answers, what a solid remediation strategy looks like and how to build the right team. Whether you're dealing with a mold situation right now or want to be better prepared.

100% free to attend.

I have been promising to bring on one guest per quarter on THE TOXIC MOLD PODCAST, and I'm holding up to my promise. I had the opportunity to interview Andi Hembroff.

Andi is a representative for Respirare Labs which is a mycotoxin testing company. We talk about the journey Andi took to get involved in the mold industry after dealing with toxic mold in her home.

We talk about the different testing methods at Respriare Labs and how you can utilize them. The AMEA (Airborne Mycotoxin Environmental Analysis) is an air test. The MESA (Mycotoxin Environmental Surface Analysis) is a surface test that can be used to test something like an heirloom piano to see if it has mycotoxins.

You can order your mycotoxin tests directly from the website at https://respirarelabs.com/ Be sure to use the discount code sworsley at checkout.

Have a safe and great week!

Steve has talked about other mycotoxin testing methods with other labs. He hasn't talked much about Respirare Labs testing methods. Next week Steve will interview a representative from the lab on THE TOXIC MOLD PODCAST that airs on Monday morning.

We will post a link to the podcast next week when it's available for our listners. In the meantime, you can listen to the podcast on Apple Podcasts, YouTube, Soundcloud or Spotify. Here's a link to the podcast on Soundcloud https://tinyurl.com/thetoxicmoldpodcast

We appreciate all of you and hope you have a great weekend!

January is radon awareness month! Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer next to smoking. Radon is the natural decay product of uranium and radium. Radon enters your home through the soils and into the living areas. Homes over a crawlspace are less likely to have elevated radon levels if it's ventilated properly.

How do you test for radon? There are several ways to test but the most accurate way of testing is with a CRM (continuous radon monitor) by a professional. You can also test with a charcoal canister and do it yourself.

Where should you test? It's best to test the lowest livable level of your home. If you have a basement, it should be tested there. If you have a crawlspace, you should test on the first level above the crawlspace.

The average radon levels should be below 4 pCi/L If you have high levels of radon, you should have a professional install a radon mitigation system. You should test your home for radon every other year.

If you'd like to purchase a great IAQ monitor, we will post a link in the comment section for a unit that monitors your radon levels in the home. The luft unit also monitors the humidity, temperature, tVOC, air pressure and eCO2.

I hope all of you are doing well and having a great start to 2026!

I hope all of you are having a wonderful and safe holiday season! As you all know, I'm not very good at posting on social media but here goes!

We have been getting a lot of questions about SPCs (small particle cleanings) and I wanted to get some information to those that aren't sure when and how it should be performed. You should always hire the proper company when doing a SPC. When I use the term "You" that means you should make sure the company you hired is doing those steps. We don't recommend DIY SPCs.

What's the purpose of the SPC? Just like it sounds, it's to remove all small particles from your home, which includes mycotoxins. Once remediation has been completed, you must address the entire home and the areas outside the remediation containments.

When should you do a SPC? That depends on your circumstances but if you have visible mold growth in your home, it should be done after the remediation has been completed. If you don't have a known mold problem in your home, you should have a SPC done at least every other year, sooner if deemed necessary.

Doing a SPC is a very complex process but I'll give you the main points. You should start with containments to separate different areas of the home. The next step is to create negative air pressure inside the containment. You'll then vacuum everything with a certified HEPA vacuum. You then perform a damp wipe followed with a dry wipe. You then perform another round of HEPA vacuuming. The last step is the white glove test to make sure all particles have been removed properly.

If you're not sure what you can keep or what should be thrown out, we have a detailed document that you can purchase for less than $15. If you'd like to purchase the digital document, please reach out to us at [email protected]

Stay safe and stay well!
