Did you Know,

Marine Plants
According to Ecology.com, "It is estimated that between 70% and 80% of the oxygen in the atmosphere is produced by marine plants." Because so many species of marine plant life are technically algae, that makes algae the plant singly responsible for producing most of the oxygen we breathe. The earth contains almost three times as much water surface as land surface, so it stands to reason that marine plant life produces much more oxygen than land plants. Ocean plants may be difficult to see because they often span great distances under water, but they are essential to our atmosphere.

Leafy Plants
Oxygen is released into the air through plant leaves. On average, leaves produce about 5 milliliters of oxygen per hour. So plants that have more leaves produce more oxygen than plants with few leaves. Therefore, large trees or leafy vines produce more oxygen than weak, sparse foliage. In addition, larger leaves produce more oxygen than smaller ones.

Did You Know,

Crabgrass seeds can germinate each year when nighttime soil temperatures reach over 50 degrees for 3 days. This “wakes up” the seed, and starts it on its process of growing up to be your worst nightmare.

Note, the seed “can” germinate at that point. So common thinking is to have the preemergent applied no later than this. That could mean a December application in Southern California, but April in Ohio.

So you can diligently observe soil temperatures, either through your own monitoring, or a local source. Perhaps the newspaper in your area provides such information, or the county agricultural department. State universities may provide this information on a website as a guideline for when to apply crabgrass preventer and other products.

But, how much of the current crabgrass seed lurking in your yard will germinate this early?

The earlier that you apply the preemergent, the sooner it will lose effectiveness. The duration of effective control depends on the type of product, and how heavy of a concentration you apply.

The control could last 2 to 3 months, or longer than 4 months, depending on several factors. So the date chosen as when to apply crabgrass preventer could determine if you need to do it one or two additional times.

Did You Know,

What Shrubs Grow in the Shade?
Homeowners have long faced the dilemma of what to grow in shaded areas. Shrubs are a likely choice, as they create boundaries and look neat and tidy without a lot of fuss. What kind of shrubs grow best in the shade? The lists are endless. The following suggestions are but a sampling of good shrubbery for the shade.

Shrubs that grow in shaded areas serve a twofold function. First, they fill in areas where other plants and shrubs can't grow, allowing homeowners to fill bare spaces near or around their homes. In addition, they provide natural habitats and protection for some yard-friendly insects.

Considerations
There are literally thousands of shrubs that grow well in the shade. Check with a professional to be certain that the shrubs you choose do in fact grow well in the region where you live.

Boxwoods grow well in shaded areas and are best noted for their presence in very formal gardens. They do give off a malodorous scent and are sensitive to late spring frosts. They grow best in the Southeastern United States.

Types
Coleus in one of its numerous forms grows extremely well in the shade. From rich greens to leaves peppered with reds and pinks, coleus are hardy plants that grow in most regions of the country after the treat of heavy frost has passed.

Types
Several types of False Holly grow beautifully as shade shrubs. From Aureomarginatas and Rotundiforius to Sasaba abd Gulf Tide, their holly-like leaves (hence the name False Holly) grow hardy and lush in the summer and produce a variety of flowers in the fall. They grow well in most regions of the United States.

Fun Fact
The President Lincoln Lilac is considered to be a flowering shrub that grows in most regions around the country except the deep south. Name for the famous president, some states are planting one of these shrubs in every school yard within their own state to mark the bicentennial of the birth of Abraham Lincoln this year.

Did You Know,

Tree roots in the lawn can be a trip hazard and a mowing hazard if not solved. Roots are vital to the survival of the tree and any solution must take into consideration the health of the tree. Many different species grow roots close to the surface. Whereas some trees have roots that come to the surface looking for water, others are victims of frost heaving and still others are exposed by erosion.

Cut away any large roots with a pruning saw that are on the surface, sticking up, and cannot be covered with soil. Be careful not to cut more than a third of the tree's roots.

Spread 2 inches of rich topsoil with a good mulch mixed into it on top of the surface roots. The mulch will allow the remaining surface roots to breath. Most mature tree species can take this weight.

Level topsoil with a landscape rake to achieve a level grade for planting grass.

Plant the lawn seed on the topsoil. Use a shade-tolerant grass such as blue grass or a shade-tolerant fescue.

Deep-water the lawn to keep surface roots from reappearing.

Did You Know,

Nature takes dozens of years to add an inch of top soil to the ground. The repeated growth and death cycle of plants and animals, weather of the soil and the work of earthworms, sow bugs, ants and billions of micro-organisms create top soil. When all the conditions are right, the soil is richly fertile, dark brown or black and crumbly to the touch. Land that has been undisturbed for thousands of years may have top soil 36 or more inches deep. Most farms consider a top soil of 4 inches to be sufficient.

Top Soil Standards
Official government standards don't exist for top soil; it is a case of "buyer beware." The American Society of Landscape Architects created its own standard for the percentage of clay, sand, organic material, pH and debris bagged top soil may contain. You can request topsoil that meets the ASLA specifications if you've hired a professional contractor for your landscape project.

If your home is in a subdivision it is likely the original top soil was removed some time ago by the contractors and never replaced. Depending upon the region, the soil can be mostly clay, sand or with luck, loam. If the homeowner rakes cut grass and fallen leaves, it is unlikely there is the proper abundance of organic material in the soil. If the homeowner buys bagged soil labeled "garden soil" there is even less official definition as to what that means and they could be buying soil no better than what is already in the backyard.

Good topsoil for a garden or a Landscape Bed can be bought or created. For a spring garden, lay out the perimeter during the fall. Dig the existing soil out of the garden to a depth of 8 inches and lay to the side. Fill the hole with 1 inch of green organic material such as kitchen debris, grass clippings and coffee grounds. Add 1 inch of soil back into the hole with the grass side facing downward. Fill with 1 inch of brown material such as straw, hay, leaves or even shredded newspapers or cardboard. Add another 1-inch layer of soil. Continue layering until the soil has been added back to the garden spot. It will be considerably higher than when it was first dug out but will eventually settle back to the normal height. Cover with wet burlap and weigh it down with rocks along the edges. By spring planting the area will be 8 inches or so of good, black topsoil.

Did You Know,

When you have plants of flowers, vegetables, shrubs and trees a lot of beginners to gardening do not realize how crucial the use of mulch is to the survival of the plants. No matter what type of garden you have whether it is container, vegetable, flower gardens or shrubs and trees it is a must to have mulch and it will help in several ways.

1. Lowering the use of water. To save water and keep the plant's roots with sufficient water - use mulch. Concerning water, just a thin layer of nature's blanket (mulch) will cut down on moisture leaving the soil surface. Denser mulches may cut water usage by as much as 50%.

2. Controlling the w**ds. By having mulch down this will prevent or at least slow down the growth of w**ds. Even if a few eventually pop through they will be easy to see and pull out of the ground.

3. Protecting against the cold. Placing mulch in your garden will protect against freezes that will usually kill many plants. People living even in zones 10 sometimes get a freeze and this would prevent a loss of their plants.

4. Keeping the soil from drying. A good layer of mulch will insure that the soil will retain moisture a lot longer time.

5. Improving soil. This means that you need to use organic mulches that decompose to contribute organic matter to the soil.

Many sorts of mulch add another layer of good looks and quality to your garden beds too. On the market now nurseries have safe colored mulch that will enhance the looks of your garden. For the benefit of the plants though try to use mulch that is made from local items shredded up like wood from trees and bushes growing in your area.

There are an ample assortment of materials which can be used for mulching your garden.

1. Some very good organic materials are wood chips, shavings or bark from trees growing in your area shredded, the smaller the better. Because wood is an organic material, it will slow decomposition and be blended into your garden soil, leaving more vitamins and nutrients for many years to come.

2. Grass clippings or dried leaves from your trees each autumn are also outstanding natural items to use for mulching your plants and flowers. Some believe straw and hay is the best to use especially alfalfa. As these are organic materials, they'll add to the general richness and producing abundantly and sustaining vigorous and luxuriant growth in your soil as they decompose.

3. A lot of people like to use mulch materials that can last for many years at a time like some popular ones that are plastic and rubber material made from recycled tires. These frequently come in the form of circular rings for placing under trees and bushes with ease. Some even use small chunks of rubber.

4. Rocks, stones and pebbles can work as a mulch also, since dressing the plain soil around your flowers and plants with pebbles or rocks functions the same purpose of holding moisture and forbidding w**d growth. Remember though these items can heat up faster and higher than other types.

5. Snow is one the best mulches of them all, as it can let you grow plants that would not last thru the winter in areas without snow farther south

Though traditionally, most mulches was made to both shield from danger the plants and flowers while feeding and improving the soil. Mulching permits you to rehash nature's products to better your garden, really nothing is wasted, and in the action your garden will appear greener and more healthy.

Did You Know,

Tree trimming is an important task that needs to be carried out regularly, without fail. Tree trimming is not only good for the tree's growth, it is also important to trim trees at regular intervals so that they do not damage property and overhead wires. Huge trees often fall due to heavy rain and make the situation complex with the damages created on the adjacent properties. So such huge trees close to any residential buildings or industrial properties should be trimmed regularly.

Perfect Time For Tree Trimming

It is commonly said that tree trimming can be done whenever the saw is sharp. This is very true, as you do not need a specific time to trim trees. Dead branches and leaves need to be trimmed at all times to ensure the rest of the tree grows smoothly. Also, if a part of the tree is infected, it needs to be trimmed without delay. The infected part of the tree may spread the damage to other parts of the tree and sometimes to the adjacent trees as well. So the trees should be monitored regularly to find out any dead parts or insects affecting them. When such damaging insects are seen, it is recommended you remove the damaged part of the tree completely for the safety of the tree.

You also need to know what kind the trees are - whether they are flowering frees, shrubs, or plants. If it is a flowering tree, you have to be very careful with the tree trimming procedure. The majority of flowering trees deposit their blossoms on the previous year. Thus, they will not blossom if the flower buds are trimmed from the tree. The finest process is to always clip flowering trees within three weeks after they cease blossoming. That should stop you from unintentionally eliminating buds holding the blossoms for the following year. Season wise trimming of the trees can make the trees get healthy and yield more on the next blossoming season. Tree trimming will keep the trees healthy and can make them grow healthier.

There are some trees that cannot be pruned at every time of the year as well. They are:

Maples - If trimmed at particular times of the year, a maple tree might "bleed" or drip as a result of the trimming. Bleeding is almost certain to take place when maples are trimmed in the seasons just prior to and subsequent to winter. Research has shown that "bleeding" does not wound the tree; therefore it turns out to be more of a surface concern. If you want to trim maple trees with no bleeding, it should be carried out whilst it is completely inactive in peak winter, or in spring or at summer time while it is in covered in leaf.

Dogwoods - If you prune dogwoods during April or May, it might cause them to be further inclined to the dogwood borer. This insect ruthlessly spoils the vascular system of the tree once it finishes boring into the trunk of the dogwood tree.

Oaks - Oaks must not be pruned from April to October, owing to the commonness of Oak Wilt disease pathogens through the time.

The Places At Which Trees Should Be Trimmed

Tree trimming may seem like an easy procedure on the surface, but you need to know exactly where to trim or else you may end up damaging the tree beyond repair. A novice engaged in tree trimming can cut off the branches in such a way that open stubs will remain and those will merrily turn into entry points for insects.

Dissimilar to human beings, trees do not redevelop tissues. As human skin restores itself, trees produce fresh tissue in the region of cut and group them. Once a tree groups a previous cut, it has an improved possibility of endurance. Care should also be taken not to hurt tree trunks with equipments such as lawnmowers, tractors and added machinery. Such injured trunks craft openings for vicious fungi. Trees can be trimmed with safer equipments like sharp saw and should be trimmed at the right places where the damages are seen or the growth has become excessive. Some of the trees blossom at very early age and so take off lot of water and energy supplied for their growth to make the blossom faster. In such cases, early blossom may block the growth of the tree and the complete growth of the tree will be impacted. In such cases, the early blossom can be trimmed and so the water and energy will be absorbed for the healthy growth of the tree.

Did You Know,

Golf course soil particularly the greens, are usually anywhere from 80% to 90% sand with 5% to 10% organic loam and peatmoss. This soil structure allows for oxygen circulation, root development, and proper drainage. This is why it is necessary to irrigate on a daily basis as well as applying fertilizer on a regular schedule.
Firstly to have a putting green type of turf, you will ne...ed to seed with the proper variety. There are a few different types and these are used in accordance with the growing location. Some varieties for greens are, bermuda, poa annua, and probably the best which is a cool season grass, the creeping "bentgrass" varieties. Bentgrass can be mowed at a very short height on a regular basis without any harm. If you do decide to go with a bentgrass green and want it to look like a golf course, you will be in for a little bit of work to keep it looking that way. It should be aerated at least once a growing season (depending on foot traffic) twice being better. After aeration, the cored holes should be top dressed with sand and the sand swept around to fill in the holes. You will need to apply a fungicide on a regular schedule as bent grass and low mowing practices will cause the turf to become more succeptible to disease. With the soil being mostly sand, you will need to use more water to keep it green and healthy also. A well groomed turf is also the target of grass dwelling insects that will reek havoc as well, grubs being the main culprit. I hope I haven't discouraged you so far? If however, you don't wish to partake in the upkeep of a golf course looking turf, you can let the bent grass grow taller and mow with a regular rotary mower at a higher setting and it will still do well. You will still need to water more often and do all the other requirements I have mentioned above though. If you do decide to go through with this venture, you will be the envy of your neighborhood. Don't forget to invite all the neighbors over for a "puttoff" competition and a barbecue once it gets well established...

According to information on the Realtor website, privacy fencing is an improvement to a property. Fencing allows buyers more privacy in the yard, by standing over 5 feet tall with no open slats. This is appealing for buyers with children and pets.

Privacy fencing normally enhances value best when placed around the backyard. It can actually detract from property value when placed ar...ound the front yard, unless other properties in the area have similar fencing configurations. It is important to note that some homeowner associations will not allow privacy fencing in front.

Large expanses of land are normally best suited for privacy fencing around the perimeter. Concrete or masonry privacy fencing can be valued higher than wooden privacy fencing, as it is not subject to termite infestation.

Concrete is a durable paving material made of cement, aggregates and water. Though it is a durable and cost-effective construction material with many uses, its composition makes it vulnerable to some chemical compounds, as well as hard wear. Avoid using road salt the first year after your driveway's construction. New concrete is particularly susceptible to the effects of deicers such as rock salt. If you must use some material for traction on slick driveways, choose coarse sand !

Keystone Walls Prevent Erosion
Soil erosion is a serious environmental threat and a major contributor to the degradation of water quality. Wind, rain and runoff displace soil particles from bare covered earth, potentially reducing the stability of the original site and impairing the performance of downstream drainage systems.

In many instances, SRWs are a cost-effective solution to eroding soil. Keystone walls are often used as part of conservation efforts along channels and waterways, near steep earthen slopes, and in other critical applications. By combining retaining wall units with soil reinforcement, the reinforced soil mass can support greater earth pressure and surcharge loads.

The result is a long-term, economical solution that minimizes or eliminates soil erosion.
