Here’s one of the smaller details that goes into a professional EV charger installation.

Because this white conductor is being used as an ungrounded conductor on a 240V circuit—not as a neutral—it needs to be properly re-identified. I used the Rack-A-Tiers Mark My Wire to change it to red, creating a clean and permanent identification without wrapping it in electrical tape.

It’s a simple tool, but it makes the finished installation cleaner and easier to understand for anyone working on the circuit later.

Here’s another example of why electrical work should always be inspected carefully.

These individual conductors were run through the cabinet space completely unprotected before entering the electrical panel. Individual conductors must be installed using an approved wiring method, such as a properly installed raceway—not simply left exposed in free air.

Even if something appears to be working, that doesn’t mean it was installed safely or correctly.

Here’s a look at the installation and programming of Levven wireless switches for separate light and ceiling fan control. ⚡

I walk through the entire thought process—identifying the wiring, installing two power controllers in the existing box, pairing each wireless switch with the correct controller, and testing the finished installation.

Wireless switching can be a great option when additional control is needed but running new traditional switch wiring would mean disturbing finished walls.

One of the best investments I’ve made for my service van has been keeping a few Rack-A-Tiers Open Splice Junction Boxes in stock.

⚡ Can a soft start help your A/C run on a generator?

This was my first time installing a soft start on an air conditioning condenser, and I wanted to share what I learned.

A soft start reduces the inrush (startup) current of the compressor, making it much easier for a properly sized generator to start and run the air conditioner during a power outage. That can be a huge benefit for homeowners looking to keep their home comfortable without investing in an oversized generator.

I’m interested to see how it performs long-term, and I’d love to see someone like The Angry Sparky put one through independent testing to see how much of a difference it really makes.

A question I hear pretty often is:

“If the wire is inside conduit, why can’t I just run Romex underground?”

The answer comes from putting a few NEC articles together.

NM-B (Romex) works great inside dry locations of a home, but once you enter an underground raceway, the installation is considered a wet location.

Relevant NEC Articles:
• 334.12(B)(4) – NM cable is not permitted in wet or damp locations.
• 300.5(B) – Underground raceways are considered wet locations.
• 310.10(C) – Conductors installed in wet locations must be suitable for wet locations.

That’s why I install an accessible junction box and transition from NM-B to THHN/THWN conductors before the underground conduit begins.

Electrical work isn’t just about making it work—it’s about making it safe and code compliant.

One of the biggest misconceptions in residential electrical work is that neutrals and grounds are the same thing.

They are not.

The neutral is a current-carrying conductor during normal operation, while the equipment grounding conductor is there for fault protection and safety.

The NEC even states:

“A grounded conductor shall not be considered a grounding conductor.”
— NEC 200.2(B)

Understanding the difference matters for safety, troubleshooting, and proper code compliance.

One small layout mistake during rough-in can turn into extra work later.

On this new construction home, the electrical contractor originally stubbed the hot tub feed out too close to the actual spa location, which would not allow the disconnect to meet NEC spacing requirements.

To make it code compliant, I had to install a junction box, extend the conductors over to the proper disconnect location, and then run back to the hot tub.

Situations like this are why electrical work is more than just making power turn on. Safety, planning, and code compliance matter.
