While we can't take credit for this immaculate facade, we did have the pleasure of uncovering and restoring some hidden beauty and fine-tuning copper details. When we first spoke with the homeowner and replaced the copper pediment cap above the front door, there was aluminum cladding covering what we hoped was an original wood corbel on the left side of the cornice. To our delight, a peek behind the metal revealed largely intact woodwork. We repaired, refinished, and replaced missing and damaged elements of the corbels on both the left and right sides. We were able to trace a relief of remaining scrollwork, curves, and flower motif and then replicate them on the scrollsaw. We also replaced the poorly done copper parapet caps to ensure that the carpentry is well protected for the long haul.

Put the final touches on the tower in Frick Park for Earth Day!

Failing stucco and paint called for repairs after nearly 100 years in service. The disrepair was more significant than was evident visually, with a large portion of the cement topping having separated from the structure.

I carefully removed the loose cement render and stripped the existing flaking and peeling paint with PeelAway. I applied a scratch coat and then a finish coat of stucco, floated to blend with the remaining original shell, then coated the old and new masonry with Renosil mineral silicate paint for a highly durable and breathable seal.

Such an incredible privilege to continue our work with the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy to repair and restore the beautiful structures in Frick Park. Roof tile replacements this morning on the gatehouses at the Frick Environmental Center. Scroll to the end to see architectural drawings of the buildings from the 1930's when they were designed and built, as well as the tile order records showing exactly what Ludowici clay tiles were used. The buildings will need flashing replacement and masonry repairs in the coming years. We look forward to helping to maintain these absolute gems!

Took a day longer than anticipated to manage the wild variations in the depth of the stone, but I was able to wrap things up in the failing light to the rumble of thunder and the faint reflection of a rainbow on the glowing copper. What a way to end the day, doing what I love and loving what I do! This sweep awning with hips is nearly 10 feet wide at its base, 18 inches deep, and 36 inches tall, with double locked standing seam panels. It was built to cover the stonework that was unfinished behind some original decorative polyurethane gable mouldings. We also replaced the original pediment cap that had been tarred and painted above the doorway with new copper.

Beautiful architectural details and thoughtful design collaboration with our client helped to bring this porch new life. The project included a ground up rebuild of the porch, jacking up a sagging second story bay window, all new trim, stained beadboard ceiling, a new flat lock copper roof and box gutters, and custom milled cedar handrails.

I haven't posted a formal recap of our extensive work on Newgate over the past two years. What began as some minor finish carpentry repairs and hanging some new gutters turned into a billowing restoration of nearly the full exterior. A full lift and relay of the original Ludowici Provincial clay tile with new underlayments and all new copper flashings. Replacement of several separate standing seam and flat lock copper roof sections. Surgical removal and re-installation of the stucco panels on the addition, but this time with an appropriate drainage system and new Oak half-timbering. Structural Oak column and beam replacements and full copper sweep awnings for the sunroom. Rebuilt Oak cornices in several areas, custom copper exhaust stack and louvered gable vents, etc. There is literally too much to detail here.

I am grateful for clients who worked with us through some significant supply chain issues caused by the pandemic and the ebb and flow of our team over time. Thankful for all of the men and women who had a hand in the labor.

Be sure to check out the story highlights for Newgate to see the "befores" and our process. Unfortunately, we ran out of slides, so it's just a glimpse of the work that went into this project.

Ending the week on a high note... a very high note! Tricky access at heights and some awkward nailing positions, but we got it done. Nearly full rebuild of a gabled dormer roof. We saved as much of the original New York red slate as possible and installed nearly 40 reclaimed slates and copper flashings to cover the rest of the repairs. Started the week hugging a turret to replace a cap and weathervane, ended it tapping in a loose slate on another!

Nearly 250 feet of new 5" k-style copper gutters and 3" x 4" downspouts for this sprawling 1920's brick charmer on a quiet cul-de-sac in Point Breeze, including a curved section above the front entry.

Shout out to Joe Colondrea at Three Rivers Gutters for running seamless gutters from our copper coil, and to .waxter.homes for introducing us to these lovely new homeowners.

Wrapping up a beautiful project in Fox Chapel with at DRS Roofing. We were able to incorporate a lot of great details with double lock copper standing seam panels on some new construction additions. Two different pinch seam pitch changes, sweep seam valley top knot, double lock crescent eave closures, and a blind corner. Two soldered flat lock sections, a bay window, and a radius gutter along with the installation of a cupola and a slew of slate repairs.

Much needed TLC for this post-Civil War Era carriage house on the campus of the Waldorf School of Pittsburgh.

As an EPA lead-safe certified firm, we were able to assist the school with lead-based paint encapsulation while ensuring the safety and well-being of students and staff.

Lots of leg work and tricky sequencing to manage particulate containment and the onset of winter weather, but she cleaned up nicely.

The 21-room house at 201 S. Winebiddle St., built for Henry J. Lynch around 1867. While currently housing the the, the building also has been known as Victoria Hall, a venue for weddings and parties (1993-2001), and the Ursuline Academy for Young Women, (1895-1993), an exclusive college preparatory school administered by the Ursuline Sisters.

Our understanding is that the carriage house was originally located on another area of the property and was moved and enclosed at some point, becoming an annex of the main building.

Wander onto the right street in Shadyside, and you might just catch a glimpse of this enchanting storybook castle. We had the pleasure of performing some much needed carpentry, flashing, and slate repairs on this beautiful mansard roof, window, and gabled dormers. We custom cut Vermont Unfading Black slates from to match the original pattern, installing nearly 100 slates. Absolutely magical!
