The Olympics… but make it landscaping! 🏅🌱

We’re talking about the Ohio High School Landscape Olympics (OHLO)!

Every year, high school students from across Ohio come together to compete in hands-on challenges that showcase the many skills and careers within the green industry.

M.J. is proud to sponsor and judge the Landscape Design Competition, and we always enjoy seeing what these students come up with!
We are also the sustainability sponsor! ♻️ We provide recycling, compost, and trash stations while teaching students how to properly sort their waste.

We’re thankful for an industry that invests in its future by giving young people opportunities to learn, compete, and discover a passion for landscaping. And a special shout out to OGIA for putting the event together every year.

The future of landscaping is looking bright! 🌱

This past week, we had the opportunity to participate in the Ohio High School Landscape Olympics (OHLO) at Ohio State ATI in Wooster!

OHLO brings high school students from across Ohio together to put their skills, creativity, and knowledge of the green industry to the test through hands-on competitions.

At M.J., we sponsor and judge the Landscape Design Competition, where students get to show off their creativity! ✏️🌳

We also provide recycling, compost, and trash stations throughout the event, helping students learn how to properly sort their waste. Because sustainability is something we believe is worth teaching, too! ♻️

A huge thank you to the organizers, educators, and industry professionals who make this event possible. Opportunities like OHLO introduce students to careers they may have never considered and help grow the future of our industry!

have you tried the soil knife test?

Push a soil knife into your landscape bed. How far can you get before you hit resistance?

After we amend a bed, we want that knife to slide deep into the soil with very little effort. Why? Because if a knife struggles to get through compacted soil, so do plant roots.

And roots need room to grow.

Healthy, well-prepared soil allows for better root development, water movement, oxygen exchange, and biological activity—all things that help plants establish and thrive.

You can buy the best plants in the nursery, but if you put them into poor, compacted soil, you’re already making their job harder.

Good landscapes start below ground.🌱

September at M.J. = a little bit of everything. 🍂

Good food, LOTS of mums, and plenty to celebrate. Here’s what we’ve been up to lately:

🇲🇽 POZOLE PARTY
To celebrate Mexican Independence Day, members of our team from Mexico treated everyone to homemade pozole and a full spread — and it was GOOD. 👏

In 25 years, this was actually the first time our crew cooked a meal for the entire company. Safe to say… we wouldn’t mind making this one a tradition. ❤️ A huge thank you to our team for sharing a piece of home and their celebration with all of us!

🎃 FALL KICKOFF
Fall has officially entered the chat.

While our maintenance crews have been keeping up with all that rain (and all that extra mowing 😅), our install and flower teams have been BUSY.

Produce auctions, work orders, planning, pumpkins, and roughly 1,000 mums later…summer color is officially making way for fall. 🍁

Bring on the cool mornings and fall color!

Our seasonal team member Paige is officially off to New York to do big things! 🗽

We’re so thankful for everything she brought to M.J. this summer, and she’ll definitely be missed around here. Good luck, Paige!

🗣️ SPANISH CLASS
One of our favorite things to see lately? A full table at morning Spanish class.

Communication matters — especially on a team made up of people from different backgrounds and first languages. We offer optional Spanish classes to help our English-speaking team members communicate better with their Spanish-speaking coworkers and continue building a stronger team.

Attendance has been awesome this month, and we love seeing everyone put in the effort. 💪

And somehow… that was September. 😅
