September 15th is the last recommended day to plant Kentucky Bluegrass based blends in Utah. Planting later than the 15th will not allow the bluegrass to fully develop before winter and limits secondary water to less than a month.

Here’s a reminder to clean your secondary irrigation water filter again! This one was clean mid-April and was needed again. Dirty filters will reduce the water pressure for your irrigation system.

A quick tip for people with secondary water supply for irrigation.
CLEAN YOUR SECONDARY WATER FILTER.
Even if it was cleaned in the spring, many are now again needing a cleaning.

The beginning of August to mid September is the best time of the season to plant a bluegrass blend in your yard. Bluegrass needs about 4 weeks of constant moisture depending on weather to develop enough to flourish in the fall. With the hot August weather, it germinates quickly, then fills in as it cools in September. Be cautious about planting too late in the fall if you have secondary irrigation. Be aware of the shut off date. When we Hydroseed a yard, we like to see 2-3 inches of loose, dry, raked soil so the Hydroseed will stir into the soil, planting the some of the seed. This also ensures a uniform germination. The seed will not stick to hard, wet spots.

Mid August to about mid September is a great time to plant bluegrass in your yard. As we turn the corner towards spring, the cooler weather is a great time to start prepping a yard for Hydroseeding. If you have a high clay content in your soil, we recommend applying granular gypsum at 50 lbs / 1,000 sq ft, and a dose of 16/16/16 fertilizer before you start to loosen the soil. This will start the breakdown of the clay soil and pop up the nutrients. This is also recommended under a couple inches of top soil for the root to feed on once it begins to develop further into the soil. We will offer our 80 percent Kentucky Blue Grass, 10 percent Perennial Rye, 10 percent Creeping Red Fescue blend when soil temperatures stabilize through the night above 45 degrees.
Native grass plantings can also happen in the spring. We try get native seeded before all the spring rains. You will have a greater success with germination if you have even a temporary sprinkler system to germinate most of the seeds planted.

At last the rains have stopped and the ground temperatures have come up! Now is a great time to plant bluegrass. Our blend consists of 80 percent bluegrass, 10 percent creeping red, 10 percent ryegrass. We can plant any available seeds with the Hydroseeding method such as native, pasture and quick growing erosion control plants.

As we wait for the night time temperatures to come up a bit and stabilize to support germination, now is a good time to prepare your ground. Before we seed, we like to see 2-3 inches of loose, dryer soil. If the soil has been loosened, then gets rained on, when it drys will form a crust which should be raked out again.
