ALERT! Please share! Lawns are still being significantly affected by a bad drought and high heat. While averaging in Abnormally Dry (D0) on the US Drought Monitor, locally, including Plainfield and a few other areas, we are also seeing symptoms of Severe (D1) and Extreme (D2) drought. The symptoms include faster growing w**ds, dormant/brown lawns, and even damaged areas around trees as they are suffering and taking water and nutrients from the grass around them. Even lawns with irrigation are struggling to keep the lawns healthy. These conditions limit our ability to apply w**d control without damaging the lawns. We are hoping for regular rainfall and more seasonable cool temps to help the lawns recover.

CRITICAL ALERT! Mulch beds: I'm seeing a large number of properties with mulch beds that have not been maintained in the past 1 to 2 years. The mulch breaks down each year into bare soil and attracts w**ds, which spread into the lawn and surrounding neighborhood. To keep w**ds out of your lawn, it is critical every early Spring to apply a fresh 2" layer of mulch, create a deep, clean, well-defined edge around each mulch bed, and keep the mulch beds free of w**ds on a weekly basis every time you mow. I understand mulch can be expensive - to save money, I recommend returning some areas back to grass, as it is easier and less expensive to maintain. Let me know if you have any questions, I am glad to make recommendations to help improve your lawn.

This "Spring" has been one of the driest I can remember. We have been in drought conditions since mid-April, which is almost unheard of. We did not receive our normal April/May thunderstorms, and it has been very hot.

In this heat, I still recommend mowing weekly (to help prevent the spread of w**ds), but do not mow during the heat of the day. The grass is under a lot of stress and mowing when the sun is hitting it hard and the temps are in the mid-to-upper-80s or higher can make the grass turn a golden color. Mow early in the morning or late in the evening. Make sure you are mowing above 3" in height!!! Do not trim the edges down below 3" either. The edges are already under more stress due to poor soil and heat radiating from the pavement well into the night.

Some of you got some good rainfall over the past 2 days, but some did not. We are still very far behind normal and the temps have been very high, evaporating rain very quickly. Lawns need 1" to 2" of water per week in long, deep waterings. In these types of conditions, light watering on a sprinkler system schedule is not enough. It is best to set your zones to output 1" to 2" and run it manually once or twice per week as needed. This will use the same amount of water, but the water will pe*****te deeper into the soil where it is needed most. If the soil has enough moisture, you should be able to stick a screw driver in the soil and it should have little-to-no resistance.

If you have any questions, please let me know. Thank you! Jeremy

After a brief return to Winter weather, this past weekend's warmth and sunshine was just enough to start waking up the lawns!

We are working around the weather to get the first treatment applied. Our goal is to have everyone done by mid-to-late-April (as long as the weather cooperates).

TIP - As soon as your grass starts growing, mow it short on the first mowing, then raise it up each week until it is at 3" or just over, and keep it there all season. Now is the time to clean up sticks and debris left over from Winter. If you have any questions about your lawn, please reach out. Have a nice Spring!

We are excited to start the 2021 lawn care season soon! As the snow melts, you can gently rake any matted grass to help stimulate the Spring greenup more quickly. If you would like to add our Season-Long Grub Control, our summer Surface Insect Control program, or any of our Perimeter Pest Control services to your existing program, please message us, call us, or email us. Thank you!

Our area is experiencing drought conditions! Keep your fingers crossed that we get tonight's forecasted thunderstorms. Remember, one rainfall (or 2 or 3) will not be enough to turn your lawn around after the 3 months of extremely high heat and drought conditions. Until conditions improve, please water deeply (1" to 2" per watering), 1 to 2 times per week, until we start to get regular rainfall. Keep in mind a typical sprinkler takes 3 to 4 or more hours to put out 1" of water. This drought map is just an average of data from all surrounding weather stations - we actually have worse conditions locally in some of our service areas (Oswego & Plainfield are in very bad condition, among others).
