In 1993, the federal government set new safety standards for automatic garage door openers making photo sensors mandatory to prevent the entrapment, injury, and death of children and pets under heavy closing doors..
👉Buying or selling your home? A home inspector will label non-working photo eyes as a major safety hazard and a deferred maintenance item. Because garage door sensors have been a federal safety mandate since 1993, inspectors test them rigorously. They will write it up in the official report as a defect requiring immediate repair or replacement by a qualified technician.

If there is one thing we want homeowners to know, it's how to do your due diligence when it comes to hiring contractors or service companies. With a quick search, you can find almost any company, which is convenient. However, it can also take you to some businesses that aren't specific to your needs , or even local to your area, as advertised.

We always recommend getting a minimum of three quotes from reputable, local businesses - they should be around similar price ranges. If the prices seem really low, it's most likely too good to be true. Ask your neighbors, friends, family, get references. There are many great garage door companies out there, there are also many scams.

🌩️The last couple nights have been brutal with storms, we hope all is well. If you are still without power and need to get out of your garage, please check that the springs are intact before moving the door. If the heavy torsion springs above the door are broken, the door will be extremely heavy and dangerous to lift. Once you verify the springs are okay, pull the red emergency safety cord down and back toward the motor to disconnect the opener. You can then safely lift the door by hand to exit the garage.

Are the photo eyes on a garage door really all that necessary?🤨 The answer is yes!😯
While the door is closing, the photo eyes are sending an invisible beam to each other, if that beam is broken, for instance by a child or animal, the door will reverse back up and prevent the door from coming down on something or someone. A simple way to test them is to block the photo eye with an object over 6 inches tall, and press the garage door opener's close button. The door should not close.
