If you live in an older house, it’s important to check whether your rim joists are insulated.

One way to insulate the interior side of a rim joist is with spray foam. It’s also possible to use rectangles of rigid foam insulation in this location. Either approach is preferable to using fiberglass or mineral wool insulation. Although the illustration shows that the top of the foundation wall is uninsulated, a proper installation of spray foam would cover the top of the concrete wall.
