Fire Prevention Month | Part 3: Stop Overloading Outlets

Just because you CAN plug everything into one outlet DOESN'T mean you should.

Plugging too many devices into one outlet or power strip can overload a circuit, causing overheating and increasing the risk of an electrical fire.

A few things to keep in mind:
⚡ Watch what you're plugging in. Space heaters and other high-wattage appliances should be plugged directly into a wall outlet, not a power strip or extension cord.
⚡ Don't stack power strips. Plugging one power strip into another doesn't give you more electrical capacity.
⚡ Pay attention to warning signs. Warm outlets, burning smells, or frequently tripping breakers shouldn't be ignored.

And remember, adding more outlets with a power strip doesn't mean you're adding more power to the circuit!

If you're constantly running out of places to plug things in, it might be time to talk to a qualified electrician about adding outlets.

If you've worked through a North Country winter, you know how much harder some jobs get once the snow starts flying.

Frozen ground, cold hands, shorter days… not exactly ideal conditions for outdoor electrical work.

Before winter really sets in, now's a good time to look at what's still on the schedule:

⚡ Exterior lighting and electrical installs
⚡ Service upgrades and meter work
⚡ Underground conduit and trenching
⚡ Any other projects that are easier without snow and ice in the way

And while you're planning those last few outdoor jobs, make sure you've got the materials you need.

Fire Prevention Month | Part 2: Extension Cord Safety 🔥

We've all used an extension cord as a quick fix, but they're not meant to be a permanent solution.

A few things worth keeping in mind:
⚡ Check for damage. Frayed wires, cracked insulation, or loose plugs? Time for a replacement.
⚡ Don't overload them. Make sure the cord is rated for the equipment you're plugging in.
⚡ Keep them out in the open. Running cords under rugs or carpets can trap heat and create a fire hazard.
⚡ Temporary means temporary. If you need power somewhere long-term, have a qualified electrician install a proper outlet.

Extension cords are handy, but using the wrong one (or using it the wrong way) can cause some serious problems.

A little caution goes a long way.

The Project Starts Before the Jobsite.

A lot happens before you ever show up to the job.

You’re figuring out materials, checking quantities, putting orders together, and probably making a few changes along the way.

Having a supply house you can call when you need something (or when the plan changes) makes that part a little easier.

Give Hynes a call or stop in. We’ll help you get what you need and get on with the job.

Did You Know?

A tripped breaker may not look like it’s OFF.

On many circuit breakers, the handle moves to an intermediate position between ON and OFF when the breaker trips. That means a quick glance at the panel might not make the tripped breaker obvious. UL specifically addresses breakers with this intermediate trip position, and Schneider Electric documents the same behavior on common QO branch breakers.

To reset this type of breaker, the handle needs to be moved fully to OFF first, then back to ON.

It’s a small detail, but a good one to know the next time you're wondering why part of the house suddenly lost power.

And if a breaker continues to trip, don’t just keep resetting it. Have the cause checked by a qualified electrician.

October is National Fire Prevention Month, and fire prevention starts with knowing when something isn’t right.

Your electrical system will often give you warning signs that shouldn’t be brushed off:
⚡ Breakers that trip frequently
⚡ Outlets or switches that feel warm or look discolored
⚡ Buzzing or crackling sounds
⚡ Burning or unusual odors
⚡ Lights that regularly flicker or dim

These signs don’t automatically tell you what the problem is, but they’re worth paying attention to.

Don’t ignore the warning signs. If you have electrical concerns, have them checked by a qualified electrician.

Follow along for more electrical fire prevention tips throughout the month.

Electrical Myth vs. Fact

MYTH: A power strip and a surge protector are basically the same thing.
FACT: They may look similar, but they serve different purposes.

A basic power strip gives you additional places to plug in your devices. A surge protector is designed to help protect connected equipment from sudden voltage spikes.

So before you plug in your TV, computer, tools, or other electronics, take a second look at what you're actually using. Just because it has multiple outlets doesn't mean it offers surge protection.
