If you are without power and your riser/mast are damaged, you MUST get this fixed before the power company can restore your power. This over site can prolong your power restoration by weeks, so contact your electrician if you are unsure.

The mast is a conduit that comes out of your meter socket (glass enclosure that the power company reads for billing). It connects to your overhead wire feed. Feel free to post or DM pics and questions. I’m happy to help where I can.

State electrical flood safety warning:

After the 2011 damage, we found that many insurance companies were only paying for insulation, flooring, and drywall repairs. They were not covering electrical wiring because it was deemed unnecessary. "With adequate ventilation, it will dry out". Within a year or two the state saw a spike in wiring failures due to impurities in the water eating through the jacketing and excessive corrosion to the conductors. Many homeowners ended up footing these bills because they didn't connect this to the flooding, or the home had been sold, so they were unaware flooding ever took place.

The inside of NM-B cable (romex) is full of cardboard from the manufacturing process and it attracts moisture like a sponge.

I just received an email from the Chief electrical inspector that any wiring partially or completely covered by water, MUST be replaced. If your adjustor has any issues, direct them to Michael Bouwens State Electrical Division. If you know you had previous damage that was not replaced, he may be able to help you as well.

If you do not have an electrical contractor, or have questions. I'd be happy to assist you or recommend someone in your area.

I have been getting a lot more calls lately relating to circuit breakers and light bulbs. We are happy to come out anytime, but I prefer to save you money by teaching you a few basic troubleshooting skills..

To reset a circuit breaker, you must turn it all the way off, then back on. There is a spring that must reset, so if you don't feel resistance, turn it back off and on again. If there is still no resistance then the breaker may be defective. If it immediately trips, do not continue to reset it, and call us immediately.

Light bulbs often come defective from the factory due to the tiny hair size element (the part that glows). It travels thousands of miles from the factory to your house, and likely encounters dozens of careless handlers and hours of vibrating miles in transit. Screw the new bulb into a, know to work, location to be sure it's actually good. If it's still a bad fixture, we are happy to troubleshoot it for you.

I hope this info helps someone and happy fall.

If you are looking for a less expensive alternative to a whole house generator. I have an alternative that will allow you to run your gas furnace, with any small generator and an extension cord. The unit runs $250 installed. The unit is also compatible to use with solar panels.

I see this about once a month, so I'm trying to help you before someone gets killed trying to save a buck. When it comes to switches, WHITE IS NOT NEUTRAL. If you take off a switch and it has three wires landed, you need a three way switch. By landing the white wire on the green screw, as shown in this pic, you are potentially energizing the plate screws or the switch box when you close this back up. Given the right conditions, anyone touching the plate screws could be electrocuted. The switch in the pic is not the proper switch for this application. PLEASE message me if you are changing your own switches, so I can give you some simple pointers.

When I do a service call to repair these issues, it often takes 5 times as long, if you have tried it yourself, because I need to see the configuration of the old switch. I then have to take off several switches and meter the wiring to fix the issue.
