Thinking about installing a sump pump and applying for the Des Moines Private Property Protection Program?

Apply first. Install second.

The City's current program terms require pre-approval before work begins. Eligible work must also be completed by a licensed plumber under a plumbing permit. PPPP Terms and Conditions (June…

That order matters.

Advanced Plumbing can help with the plumbing side of the process, but homeowners should review the City's current eligibility requirements before work begins.

Sometimes knowing about a program is helpful.

Knowing the rules before you start is even better.

Did You Know Des Moines Has a Sump Pump Program?

Des Moines homeowners, this one is worth knowing about.

The City of Des Moines' Private Property Protection Program may reimburse qualifying property owners for 100% of eligible costs, up to $1,500.

Eligible projects can include installing or redirecting a sump pump so foundation drainage goes to an appropriate outlet instead of the sanitary sewer. PPPP Terms and Conditions (June…

But there's an important catch:
You need City pre-approval before the work begins. PPPP Terms and Conditions (June…

If a sump pump installation has been on your home-improvement list, this is a program worth researching.

Your Backup Needs a Checkup, Too

Already have a battery backup sump pump?

Good.

When was the last time you tested it?

A backup system shouldn't be something you install and forget. The pump needs to activate properly, and the battery needs to be capable of doing its job when the power goes out.

Add this to your storm-prep list:

Primary pump: Check.
Discharge line: Check.
Backup pump: Check.
Backup battery: Check.

Prepared beats surprised.

What If the Power Goes Out?

Your sump pump is running.

The rain is coming down.

Then the power goes out.

Now what?

A battery backup sump pump provides another layer of protection when your primary pump can't operate because of a power outage or other failure.

The backup isn't there because you expect your primary pump to fail.

It's there because sometimes the conditions that make you need a sump pump are the same conditions that can knock out the electricity powering it.

That's one backup plan worth thinking about before you need it.

The Test You Don't Want to Perform During a Storm

When is the worst time to find out your sump pump doesn't work?

When the water is already rising.

A sump pump can sit unused for long stretches and then suddenly become one of the most important pieces of equipment in your home.

If you haven't tested yours recently, now is a good time.

And if you hear unusual noises, notice constant running, see corrosion, or the pump doesn't activate properly, don't ignore it.

Storm preparation starts before the storm.

Has your sump pump been busier than usual?

There's a reason.

After an exceptionally wet September, the ground around Central Iowa is already saturated. Polk County emergency officials have warned that sump pumps may begin running with much less additional rainfall than homeowners normally expect. KCCI https://ow.ly/LmGF50ZUvzl

That means now is not the time to assume the pump sitting quietly in your basement is ready.
Listen for unusual noises. Make sure it activates. Check the pit and discharge line.

A few minutes today can tell you a lot before the next heavy rain arrives.

Delivery Day Should Be the Easy Part

The appliance is ordered.

The delivery date is on the calendar.

Now what?

Before your new dishwasher, refrigerator, or washing machine arrives, take a few minutes to think about what it's replacing and what it's connecting to.

Older supply lines?

A shut-off valve you haven't touched in years?

A refrigerator that didn't previously have a water dispenser?

Signs of hard water?

Those are much easier to address before the appliance arrives than while the installer is waiting.

The Before You Buy rule is simple:

New appliance. Check the old plumbing.

Not sure what you're looking at? Advanced Plumbing can help.

Save This Before Your Appliance Arrives

New appliance on the way?

Here are five things worth checking before delivery day:

1. Supply lines
Look for visible wear, corrosion, leaking, or damage.

2. Shut-off valves
Make sure they're accessible and working properly.

3. Drain connections
Look for leaks, drainage issues, or anything that doesn't look quite right.

4. The installation location
Make sure the necessary plumbing connections are available for your new appliance.

5. Your water quality
If hard water has been an ongoing issue, your new appliance will be exposed to it, too.

You don't need to diagnose your own plumbing.

The goal is simply to catch the questions before installation day.

Save this one for your next appliance upgrade.

The Most Expensive Part Isn't Always the Appliance

When you're spending hundreds or even thousands of dollars upgrading an appliance, the last thing you want is an old connection creating a new problem.

Supply lines. Shut-off valves. Drains. Water lines.

They're not nearly as exciting as the appliance you're buying, but they play a big role once that appliance is installed.

Before your next home upgrade, don't just ask:

"Which appliance should I buy?"

Also ask:
"Is my home ready for it?"

A little preparation can go a long way toward protecting your investment.
