I’m getting some serious masonry inspiration at Watts Towers in LA! These structures, built by one man over 33 years, filled me with awe. The intricate mosaics, the complex skeletons of the towers, the fact he did it with no scaffolding or welding…absolutely mind-blowing. 😍 BTW, that statue of the artist is his actual height!

Great question, anonymous stranger who left this note on my car! Friction and gravity are the two forces that hold a dry stone wall together, since it doesn’t use mortar or cement. The friction of each stone with its neighbors keeps it in place. We place stones so that gravity pulls them toward the center of the wall, making the wall stronger over time. Retaining walls fail due to a few common culprits: not enough stone in the wall to withstand pressure from the soil, poor drainage behind the wall, and no through stones that tie into the back of the wall. This wall had all 3 of those problems, so it was super satisfying to rebuild it properly! Side note, we enjoyed this client’s collection of vintage alarm clocks. 😀

La plage, c’est fini! We got this raised beach done just in time for our clients to enjoy over Memorial Day weekend. Can’t wait to see it when the grass comes in!

We’re spoiled around here with many lake and mountain view and our current project is no exception! We got a good start on what will soon be a perched beach on Lake Winnepesaukee.
