Next week, there are two nights in the mid-20s forecast for south Mississippi. This is bad news for blueberry growers as they have some bushes blooming now.

Freeze protection of blueberry fields is not an exact science. It is difficult to make recommendations about freeze protection because every freeze event is different, but a good practice is to wet the soil before freezing conditions.

The common method of determining if buds have frost damage is to cut through the bud several hours to a couple of days after a freeze and look for browning that indicates injured tissue. Sometimes the freeze injury is not severe enough to kill the fruit or flower completely but may affect individual parts, such as the pistil, stamen, or seeds, which may result in reduced fruit set or size. Blueberry fruit can develop and mature after a portion of the ovaries are damaged; however, because fruit size is highly correlated with seed number, fruits from damaged flowers are usually smaller.

You can find more info about freeze protection and freeze injury to blueberry bushes in this publication by Dr. Eric Stafne: http://extension.msstate.edu/publications/publications/establishment-and-maintenance-blueberries

It's especially important to stay on top of your lawn care tasks, especially during these summer months!

Here are a few turf chores to do from June 22 – September 21:

✅Continue mowing and properly fertilize your lawn. Summer grasses are at their peak during these months, so it’s important to be consistent in caring for your lawn.

✅Sometimes we go days without seeing rain in the summer. Lawns need about one to one inch and a half of water each week. Be prepared to have a sprinkler system ready to use, as needed.

✅If you still have summer w**ds, continue with a postemergence herbicide to eliminate those pesky w**ds!

✅In late summer, start looking at preemergence herbicides to control winter w**ds. Winter w**ds begin their cycles during this time, so it’s a good idea to be on top of it by applying preemergence herbicides before they pop up.

Thin your crape myrtle trees. Do not top your crape myrtle trees. A thinned crape myrtle compared to a topped crape myrtle:

More blooms
Fewer aphids
More pollinating insects
Less sooty mold
Fewer suckers
Fewer watersprouts
Less Cercospora fungal leaf spot
More birds nesting
More aesthetic bark characteristics
No fungus infecting stems

Know why you are pruning, know how to prune, know what you are pruning, etc etc etc before you prune. Frbruary is the time to do “as needed” pruning.

Mulch helps keep your garden and landscape healthy! To be effective, mulch should be porous enough to let water and air pass through it, as well as dense enough to prevent w**d growth.

🌱New plantings—Mulching around new plantings helps keep moisture in the root ball of the new plant until the roots have established in the surrounding soil.

🌸Annual and perennial flower beds and vegetable gardens—Mid-spring is the ideal time to mulch annual and perennial flower beds and vegetable gardens after the soil has warmed for active root growth. Remove existing w**ds before applying the mulch. Apply winter mulches after the soil has cooled but before it has frozen. Mulch the entire bed.

🌳Trees and shrubs—For trees and shrubs in a bed, mulch the entire bed. For those in a lawn, mulch a 3- to 6-foot-wide ring from the trunk out. It should be about 4–6 inches deep. Keeping trees and shrubs mulched will prevent lawn equipment damage. DO NOT place mulch directly against the trunk of the trees and shrubs. Pull the mulch back from the trunk about 2 to 3 inches. This will prevent problems caused by wet mulch and rodent damage.
