With fall's arrival in Clallam County, it's time to prepare your home for the damp and windy months ahead. Taking care of these essential maintenance tasks now can prevent costly repairs and ensure your home is cozy and safe throughout the winter. Here's a checklist of important home maintenance items with a special focus on the unique conditions of the Pacific Northwest.
Exterior and Water Management
Given the significant rainfall in the region, managing water away from your home is a top priority.
* Clean Gutters and Downspouts: This is arguably one of the most critical tasks. Gutters clogged with leaves and debris can lead to water backing up and damaging your roof, siding, and foundation. After cleaning, run water through them to ensure they are flowing freely.
* Inspect Your Roof: Look for any missing, damaged, or curling shingles. The heavy rains and winds of a Clallam County winter can turn a small issue into a major leak. Pay close attention to the flashing around chimneys, vents, and skylights.
* Check for and Seal Air Leaks: Inspect window and door frames, as well as areas where pipes and wires enter your home. Caulk and weatherstripping are inexpensive ways to prevent drafts and save on heating bills.
* Examine Siding: Look for any cracks or gaps in your siding that could allow water or pests to enter.
* Yard Drainage: Ensure the ground around your foundation slopes away from the house. This will help prevent water from pooling and seeping into your basement or crawlspace.
Plumbing and Heating
As temperatures begin to drop, protecting your plumbing and ensuring your heating system is ready are crucial.
* Disconnect and Store Garden Hoses: Drain all water from your hoses and store them indoors to prevent them from cracking in the cold.
* Shut Off and Insulate Exterior Faucets: Turn off the water supply to your outdoor faucets and consider installing insulated faucet covers to prevent freezing.
* Insulate Exposed Pipes: Check your crawlspace, basement, and attic for any exposed water pipes and insulate them to prevent them from bursting in freezing temperatures.
* Service Your Heating System: It's a good idea to have your furnace or heat pump professionally serviced before you need to rely on it daily. At a minimum, replace your furnace filter to improve air quality and efficiency.
Yard and Debris Management
A little yard work now can prevent major headaches later.
* Trim Trees and Shrubs: Prune any branches that are close to your roof or power lines. Strong winds can cause these to break and cause significant damage.
* Rake Leaves: A thick layer of leaves on your lawn can smother the grass and create a damp environment that encourages pests.
* Secure Outdoor Items: Store or secure patio furniture, grills, and other outdoor items that could become projectiles in a windstorm.
Pest Prevention
Cooler weather sends pests looking for a warm place to spend the winter. Common unwelcome guests in Clallam County include spiders, ants, and rodents.
* Seal Entry Points: In addition to sealing air leaks, check for any other small openings in your foundation, siding, and around utility lines where pests could enter.
* Keep a Tidy Yard: A clean yard with trimmed vegetation near the house gives pests fewer places to hide.
* Properly Store Firewood: If you have a wood-burning stove or fireplace, store your firewood off the ground and away from your house to avoid attracting termites and other insects.
Interior Safety Checks
Finally, take some time to ensure your home's safety systems are in working order.
* Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Replace the batteries and test your detectors to ensure they are functioning correctly.
* Inspect Your Fireplace and Chimney: If you plan on using your fireplace or wood stove, have it professionally cleaned and inspected to prevent chimney fires.
* Prepare an Emergency Kit: With the possibility of winter storms and power outages, it's always wise to have an emergency kit with essentials like flashlights, batteries, water, non-perishable food, and a first-aid kit.
