Hurricane Season Engineering Tip – Day 3

Water Intrusion Weakens Concrete and Masonry Systems

You do not need visible flooding for structural damage to occur.

• Hydrostatic pressure builds as soil becomes saturated, pushing moisture into slabs, foundations, and walls through microcracks.

• Reinforcing steel corrosion begins once moisture reaches rebar, expanding from the inside and causing cracking and spalling.

• Loss of bond in CMU and slabs occurs when prolonged moisture reduces the effectiveness of grout, mortar, and concrete to work together under load.

Storm related water intrusion can silently degrade structural systems over time. Early engineering evaluation helps identify risks before they become costly or unsafe repairs.

Hurricane Season Engineering Tip – Day 2

What to Inspect First After a Hurricane Before Making Repairs

Before cosmetic repairs begin, structural systems should be evaluated in the correct order.

• Start with structural components, not finishes. Roof framing, columns, and load bearing walls take priority over drywall, flooring, or paint.

• Check connections and anchors. Wind uplift and lateral forces often damage fasteners and ties before visible cracking appears.

• Foundations tell the full story. Settlement, shifting, or slab cracking can indicate deeper structural movement.
Post storm inspections should follow a clear structural hierarchy. Verifying core systems first helps prevent unsafe conditions, repeat repairs, and unnecessary costs.

Hurricane Season Is Here. Engineering Tips All Week.

Day 1: Do not fully drain your pool before a storm.

In Florida, a high-water table means groundwater pressure can build quickly after heavy rain. If a pool is emptied, that pressure can push the shell upward, causing cracking, shifting, or total structural failure. Pools can literally float out of the ground.

Keeping water in the pool provides stabilizing weight and helps protect the structure during extreme weather.

All week, we will be sharing practical, engineering based tips to help property owners reduce storm related risks.
