🍂 Getting Your HVAC System Ready for Cooler Weather? 🍂
Before those temperatures start dropping, here are a few things you can do around your home to make sure your HVAC system is ready:
🔥 Test your heat early
Turn your heat on before the first really chilly night. It’s better to find out about a problem now than when you really need it!
🧹 Change your air filter
A clean filter helps maintain good airflow and keeps your system from working harder than it needs to.
🌬️ Check your vents and registers
Make sure they're open and aren't blocked by furniture, rugs, or curtains.
🌡️ Check your thermostat
Make sure your thermostat is working properly and replace the batteries if needed.
👃 Don't panic over a little burning smell
When you turn your heat on for the first time in a while, you may notice a dusty or slightly burning smell. This is usually from dust that has collected on the heating components over the summer and should go away after the system runs for a little while. If the smell is strong, continues, or smells like something is actually burning, turn the system off and have it checked.
🌀 Check your airflow
If some rooms aren't heating like they normally do, or you've noticed weaker airflow from your vents, it's worth getting it checked out before you need your heat regularly.
🍃 Keep your outdoor unit clear
If you have a heat pump, keep leaves, grass, and other debris cleared away from the outdoor unit. Make sure there is plenty of room around it for proper airflow.
🔊 Listen for unusual noises
Rattling, squealing, grinding, or other noises you haven't heard before shouldn't be ignored.
💨 Check for unusual odors
A dusty smell when first turning on the heat can be normal, but persistent or unusual odors should be checked out.
🧯 Check your carbon monoxide detectors
If you have a gas furnace, make sure your carbon monoxide detectors are working and have fresh batteries.
🛠️ Schedule maintenance if needed
If your system hasn't been checked recently, getting it looked over before cooler weather arrives can help catch potential problems before they leave you without heat.
A little preparation now can go a long way toward keeping your home comfortable as the weather gets cooler! 🏠🍂
