Don't let the name fool you, Sneezeweed (Helenium autumnale) won't make you sneeze! Its unusual name comes from a historical use of its dried leaves, not from allergy-causing pollen.

What makes this native perennial truly special is its timing. As many summer flowers begin to fade, Sneezeweed bursts into bloom, providing a much-needed source of nectar and pollen for bees and butterflies preparing for the colder months.

A healthy habitat supports pollinators all season long, not just in spring.

Before a single plant goes into the ground, we take time to understand how a space can best serve the people who use it, and the wildlife that depends on it.

For the West Slope Community Library, our vision was to transform an overgrown entrance into a welcoming, family-friendly landscape that celebrates Pacific Northwest native plants while improving visibility, supporting pollinators, stabilizing the slope, and working toward Backyard Habitat Certification. The design also preserves important site features, improves accessibility, and keeps long-term maintenance in mind.

Thoughtful design is the foundation of every successful landscape, and it's the second step in our process after the initial consultation.

The plant's naturally aromatic leaves also make it less appealing to deer and rabbits, making it a smart choice for resilient, low-maintenance landscapes.

As the plants have grown in, the landscape has become more than a beautiful entrance. Western Columbine (Aquilegia formosa) is one of the Pacific Northwest's most fascinating native wildflowers, and every part of it has a purpose.

Its dramatic red and yellow flowers aren't just beautiful. Their long nectar spurs evolved alongside hummingbirds, whose slender beaks can easily reach the nectar hidden deep inside. After flowering, the seed heads continue the story by providing food for finches and other songbirds well into fall.

Even beneath the surface, this plant is hard at work. Western Columbine serves as a host plant for native butterflies and moths, supporting the next generation of insects that keep our ecosystems healthy.
