So often we see Laceleaf maples that are let go and take on the “Cousin It” or “Blob” vibe (picture one). We ALSO see them get hedge pruned or hacked into the “flying saucer” or “umbrella” state…none of which highlights their incredible interior structure, nor great for airflow and encouraging natural growth. There’s an art to pruning them, to embracing their nature, showing off the interior - but doing so safely!

We did a laceleaf pruning workshop with Tillou Botanical Arts and it was awesome. Love this tree, it hadn’t been pruned in about 30 years - and the first stage went pretty good if you ask us! Slide 3 is the current state.

Here’s a how to make some stuff with fir or spruce tips! Make sure not to confuse with yew because they’re poison. Oh and I only have time to do this because I use Jobber which saves me time. Link in bio for free trial and a discount if you use our link!
