As we get ready for the first day of school at Lake Oswego Middle School next week, we are reflecting on the ideas that drove design.

Throughout design, we heard from students and staff that connections to Pacific Northwest nature were important for the new school – and that if the school could connect to the local ecosystem and surrounding areas of the school, it “would help students feel like they belong more in our school.”

Deep research into the material, cultural, and ecological histories of the site and community shaped the school design. From colors, patterns, and textures to natural materials and native plants, the school celebrates the unique ecological characteristics of our region.

We look forward to seeing students, educators, and community members use the new LOMS for the first time this fall!

We’re excited to introduce our 2026 Summer Intern Cohort! The entire group brings so much curiosity and creativity to the office and we can't wait to see how their backgrounds and experiences shape their journeys with us.

Please join us as we welcome Nagelli, Jenny, Unique, and Yuxin to BRIC!

⭐Nagelli recently graduated from Portland State University this spring. She’ll support the Fowler Middle School team this summer and help lead our Pathways Storytelling initiative. If we're especially lucky, she might share some of her famous carrot cake with the office, too!

⭐Jenny first joined BRIC as a high school grad and now she’s gearing up for her fourth year at University of Oregon. This summer she’ll contribute to both Fowler Middle School as well as office-wide sustainability efforts. Outside of school, Jenny’s proud of her green thumb and her growing collection of bonsai and lucky bamboo.

⭐Unique is a recent University of Oregon grad and local Oregonian with strong connections to her Hmong heritage. She’ll be diving into projects across Oregon City School District this summer. Unique will also support design studies and help shape our sustainability initiatives.

⭐Yuxin is preparing to enter her third year as an architecture student at Cornell University. This summer, she'll be joining the Oregon City School District team, shaping sustainability initiatives, and collaborating with educators and community members through our Summer Summit event—all while on the hunt for the best food Portland has to offer!

We’re also excited to welcome Patricia back to BRIC for the summer, this time as an Emerging Professional and recent grad from Savannah College of Art and Design. After interning with us for two years, there’s no one better to lead and mentor this summer’s cohort!

⛳ Yesterday was a great day on the course! BRIC was proud to support the Foundation for Tigard Tualatin Schools' Tee Up Fore Schools Golf Tournament at Tualatin Country Club. Ken Bell hit the course with a great group, and we got to help warm things up at the driving range before tee-off.

As one of two different reception locations Downtown, we’re proud to host student work from classrooms across the Portland metro area. Join us on Thursday, May 7th from 5:30-7:30pm to explore exciting community design projects that were inspired by more than 3,000 hours of mentorship by 150+ volunteer design professionals.

Architecture Foundation of Oregon

One of the most meaningful parts about working with interns is getting to support their growth, both during and after their time at BRIC.

BRIC team members recently attended Portland State University's M.Arch midterm open house to connect with two of our interns: Nathalie Hutchinson (current) and Alex Yarovaya (Summer 2023 Cohort).

With an emphasis on subversive community-led design, Nathalie’s thesis explores a “community investment trust” financial structure through a multigenerational housing project in SE Portland. Alex’s thesis project seeks support and empower neurodiverse individuals through the development of an equine therapy center with connections to nature interwoven throughout the program.

From their care and ingenuity to the questions they’re continuing to examine, witnessing the ways Nathalie and Alex are championing social change and holistic wellbeing through design is deeply inspiring. We’re so proud of what they’ve accomplished, and we can’t wait to cheer them on as they continue to grow this semester!
