Deschutes Central Library is open to the public! This innovative library celebrates its connection to Central Oregon with spectacular views of the surrounding High Desert landscape and volcanic peaks. The site derives its character from the setting, featuring rocky landforms that envelop outdoor spaces, weathering steel and basalt walls, Ponderosa pines and extensive native plantings. Multiple outdoor spaces support community events and visitors of all kinds - we hear that a few friendly local llamas were recently in attendance. Thanks to The Miller Hull Partnership and Deschutes Public Library for the fantastic collaboration!

The Walker Macy team spoke at WASLA Field Day about two recently opened projects at the periphery of the UW Campus: the UW ICA Basketball Training Facility and the UW Montlake Medical Center Arrival. Serving the athletic district and hospital respectively, both projects were designed to instill a sense of place in areas that have traditionally been treated as functional and secondary to the campus experience. The team discussed the ways that two very different site designs help welcome the public, create identity, support complex vehicular and pedestrian access, and provide creative design solutions to universal accessibility.

Congratulations to Urban Designer Cameron Blakely, who is spending the month at the Wright Ingraham Institute as a fellow in the Field Workshop exploring drought adaptation across the San Luis Valley and Taos Plateau. Bringing together designers, researchers, artists, and community practitioners, the workshop examines how hydrology, ecology, culture, and land stewardship can inform more resilient futures. We’re excited to see the ideas and perspectives Cameron brings back to our studio as we continue asking thoughtful questions about how landscapes can adapt and flourish.

The world is coming to Seattle once again.

As fans gather for the Round of 32 match today to watch Belgium vs Senegal, the waterfront offers a chance to experience the city beyond the stadium. From Myrtle Edwards Park to Victor Steinbrueck Park and Pier 62, a network of public spaces creates opportunities to walk, bike, relax, and connect with Elliott Bay before and after the game.

Through Elliott Bay Connections and the restoration of Victor Steinbrueck Park, Walker Macy has helped strengthen the links between Seattle’s iconic waterfront destinations—creating places that support everyday recreation while welcoming the energy of major civic events.

Elliott Bay Connections began with a simple idea: create a unified waterfront experience that connects people to each other and to the landscape of the Salish Sea.

Walker Macy led an extraordinary team of partners to transform Myrtle Edwards Park, Centennial Park, and the waterfront corridor between downtown Seattle and the Olympic Sculpture Park. The 2 mile stretch of parks and trails expands access to the water, restores shoreline habitats, introduces nearly 74,000 native plants, improves accessibility, and creates opportunities for recreation, exploration, and connection to the landscape. The new amenities building, haʔłali—meaning "the good place" in Lushootseed—creates a welcoming destination for residents and visitors alike.

We are so thrilled to see the Elliott Bay Connections collaboration come to fruition. The recent opening celebrations have been an occasion to reflect on the experience and join the community in enjoying this special place!

From a grassroots DIY skate spot to a new and improved community asset, The Courts 2.0 is officially breaking ground. What began in 2020 as an improvised skatepark built by Portland State University students and the local community on the abandoned tennis courts adjacent to Shattuck Hall, grew into a community hub and became one of the most active spaces in downtown Portland. After its closure in 2024, the community rallied to bring The Courts back in its second iteration at SW 4th Ave. and Lincoln St.

Walker Macy is proud to partner with Portland State University, Skaters for Portland Skateparks, Collective Concrete, Grindline Skateparks, Humber Design Group, and Prosper Portland on the next chapter of this unique space. The new skate plaza will preserve the spirit of the original Courts while creating an active recreation gateway into Portland State University campus. The improved site will provide more generous seating and gathering areas, integrated skate features, art opportunities, and lots of flexible open space with smooth ground for DIY features to fill in.

We celebrated yesterday’s groundbreaking ceremony and look forward to welcoming the community back when The Courts 2.0 opens later this summer.

The renewed Myrtle Edwards and Centennial Parks bring a mile of public open space to Elliott Bay, with native plantings, resilient shorelines, new amenities, and stunning views of the Olympic Mountains, Mount Rainier, and the Salish Sea.

Walker Macy led a fantastic team of collaborators on an inspired, fast-moving endeavor to revitalize these parks. It is thrilling to see the parks open today for everyone to enjoy!

What if climate adaptation could do more than protect a neighborhood—what if it could help strengthen its identity, resilience, and future?

Last week, Walker Macy Principal Ken Pirie shared our work on the Duwamish River Sea Level Rise Adaptation Strategy at the WASLA Conference in Tacoma.

Centered on Seattle’s South Park and Georgetown neighborhoods, the project explores how equitable, community-driven infrastructure can respond to rising sea levels while supporting the people, businesses, and character that make these communities unique.

Ken was joined by David Goldberg of Seattle Public Utilities, a key collaborator helping move this important work forward through ongoing leadership and community engagement.
