Part Two of The American Iris Society 2026 National Convention garden tour at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden.

When we last left off, we were schlepping up a giant hill on our way to the Guest Iris Beds, in 95 degree heat.

I’ve posted before about some of the challenges that I face since I have some serious heat intolerance AND a UV sensitivity (that results in hives if I get too much sun). Ya’ll… it was full sun, hot as hades with humidity from the tropics, and as you can imagine, I was not skipping along 😅

Through sheer stubbornness and with the encouragement of my travel buddy and good friend, Heather Poole, we made it to the top, and the first garden bed.

Once we made it past there to the shady spot, I (very gracefully 👀) went to sit down on the ground since benches were already taken (and tbh the floor tends to be more comfortable anyways) and once I realized it (the floor) was MUCH cooler than the air around us, I announced I was fine and to not panic, and promptly laid down on the ground, second iris bed be damned.

I know what you’re thinking…”eww,” “gross,” “Angie…for real the floor?!”
At this point, we were all sweaty, miserable, and the floor was cold. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Hugh Stout Jr. found this delightfully charming (my words not his) and I got my very own photo shoot of me giving up on the grounds of the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens 😂

But how do we have more photos?! The most amazing human ever, Heather, took my camera and went and got pictures. If ya’ll don’t have a girl group that supports you when you want to buy the pretty flowers, and lets you lay on the ground while they take pictures of the pretty flowers for you, you need better friends. Many of the following photos are compliments of Heather Poole, and I am immensely grateful to her for her help!

Don’t be alarmed, once I became functional again, we made it back down for lunch, and then found shelter in the beautiful gift shop, where I found my new favorite umbrella (which saved me later in the week). Shoutout to Mayna White-Haggard for taking it with her back home and getting it to me!

I know I’m jumping around, but this is just how my brain works 😅

Hugh Stout Jr. - this is for you, however this is just Part 1.

The first official day of the Garden Tours at the The American Iris Society 2026 National Convention was the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. It is absolutely gorgeous, however it was also 20 degrees over normal and 94 degrees. And Humid. Soooo humid.

Your girl (me) has heat intolerance and a whole host of other issues. This becomes important later.

These photos are of the lovely conservatory where we had brunch/breakfast snacks and where lunch was held. Lots of people photos here. This set also includes the detour to the Japanese garden and documenting the path to the Convention Iris beds. Side note…the Convention Beds were on the opposite side of where the Conservatory was. This is also important later.

Bonus note, every girl needs a girl power group! Special thanks to Oklahoma Iris Society Membership Chair, Emily Rush Leidy, and OIS Sunshine Chair, Heather Poole, for helping to keep me alive. This is also important later 😅

Since I’ve been talking so much about The American Iris Society 2026 National Convention, I wanted to share the updated graphic for the AIS 2027 National Convention host by the Oklahoma Iris Society.

I am co-chair for this convention with Michael Kowalchyk (of Daylily Convention fame as well!) and we would love to have you!

Please feel free to ask questions! You can also search “AIS Convention 2027” on Facebook find the official page, where you can sneak peak some of the tour gardens.

Please note that not all the pages are live yet. As we finalize details as we get closer, those pages will go live.

Hope to see y’all in Oklahoma in 2027!

That being said, here is Part 1 of Rutgers University gardens as part of the The American Iris Society 2026 National Convention Gardens Tour. What you’ll see a lovely, well marked garden for the Convention Guest Iris.

As much as I love the iris, I also love the people! There is something so special about the mutual joy of seeing the nature, and being able to witness and capture that joy makes all the deadlines worth it!

Thank you to my Oklahoma Iris Society family who helped keep me alive as I was wandering the nature and bouncing from pretty flower to pretty flower.

I try to capture the names (of iris and people) as accurately as possible. Please feel free to tag someone if I missed them!

I promise I’m alive LOL. I hit a wall and had to take a break. I still find it hard to take warning signs into account after years of overachieving and always trying to be the top student - it takes a while to deconstruct. It helps if your body gets tired of you and shuts you down 😅

Oklahoma Iris Society’s very own Hugh Stout Jr. of Stout Gardens at Dancingtree receiving his (very well deserved) Award - the 2025 Sass Medal for his 2019 introduction, Fried Green Tomatoes, at the The American Iris Society National Convention 2026 in New Jersey.

We are so proud of him, and I’m delighted to call him friend! CONGRATULATIONS!

The final tour day at the much anticipated garden of Gary Slagle! TBH, I know I was somewhere in New Jersey, near Pennsylvania, but I have no idea where exactly!

Even though the week had weather extremes like it was channeling Oklahoma Spring, and it was chilly and lightly drizzling when we got there, his garden was LOVELY! I am madly in love with his Siberian Iris, and I got to see so many seedlings! I love the little previews we get, and I enjoy bonding with fellow iris lovers as we “oooo” and “ahh” over all the pretties!

Now that I’ve slept for a solid day, time to update! Day 1 was an iPhone photos day of playing tourist in NYC! We navigated the train/subway, visited Chinatown and Little Italy, and stayed alive while in the record heat! Amtrak and NJ Transit was feeling festive with the Iris Decorations!
