If you’ve followed us for any amount of time, you probably already know we’re big fans of passivhausMAINE

Yesterday, we welcomed the latest cohort of students in Passivhaus Maine’s Pre-Apprentice Program to our office on Peaks Island.

The program complements our own carpentry apprenticeship by giving participants an introduction to the construction industry through the lens of high-performance building and Passive House principles, helping build both a stronger workforce and a deeper understanding of better building practices here in Maine.

Whether you’re looking to start a career in construction, hire an apprentice carpenter, or deepen your own knowledge of high-performance building, Passivhaus Maine is an incredible resource.

We’re always excited to support the work they’re doing and to welcome the next generation of builders into the industry.

It's a sailing extravaganza for a great cause! Tomorrow, Saturday, August 8, it's the SailMaine Festival & Regatta, raising money for scholarships and community sailing programs. Come out for a day of racing on beautiful Casco Bay and an after-party with food, music, and drinks to support community sailing. Juniper is proud to sponsor this amazing event that helps provide funds for programs including free sailing for "City Sailors" and adaptive sailing. A custom built-in window bench for extra storage, a cozy reading corner, and open shelving to display personal treasures, combine to make this mezzanine a true destination rather than just a pass-through space.

Swipe to see the incredible view of the woods beyond the floor-to-ceiling living room windows just beyond the railing on the right-hand side!

One of the realities of designing and building homes is that every problem solved can reveal another one. With thousands of small decisions shaping each project, this is where an experienced, creative team makes all the difference.

In this Cape Elizabeth home, we used pocket doors throughout the design to maximize usable square footage. By eliminating the swing radius of traditional doors, we were able to reclaim valuable space for furniture, storage, and everyday living.

But that decision created an unexpected challenge.

The adjoining rooms were color drenched in different paint colors, and unlike a traditional door jamb, a pocket door sits in the center of the opening. That left us with a tricky question: where should one color stop and the next begin?

Our solution was a subtle but deliberate detail: a routed channel centered in the door jamb, establishing a clear, intentional break between materials.

It’s a minor tweak on paper, but it perfectly illustrates how solving the smallest details can bring the broader architectural plan together.

Not every experienced carpenter wants to run every project. Some just want to build exceptional homes, keep growing their craft, mentor others, and work alongside a great team.

If that sounds like you, we'd love to talk.

Juniper is hiring a Carpenter 3 to join our award-winning design-build team, building high-performance custom homes throughout Southern Maine.

To save floor space and keep the layout open, we opted for a sliding door in this primary suite. While a pocket door would disappear into the wall, this beautiful wood grain was simply too pretty to tuck into a wall. By mounting it as a sliding barn door, it now serves as a functional divider and a beautiful design feature you can appreciate from both rooms.

How do you make a custom home feel cohesive from room to room?

Making hundreds of design decisions for a new build can feel overwhelming. Our integrated design-build team works collaboratively to explore possibilities, refine ideas, and look for opportunities to create meaningful connections throughout your home.

In this Cape Elizabeth home, one of our favorite recurring elements was this colorful semi-transparent stain that allows the wood grain to remain visible. The same blue stain reappears on the kitchen island and pantry cabinets, while a complementary dark green was used in the mudroom.

Together, these details create a subtle thread that ties the home together while allowing each space to maintain its own distinct personality.
