I’m loving this Melnor sprinkler and its multiple settings and adjustability. As always, my gardening recommendations are completely my own. Luckily for you, I don’t even come close to the number of followers it would take for a company to notice me and send me free swag to try to influence my opinion, so all you get here are the products I actually use and value in my garden.

Never really appreciated mountain laurel (Kalmia patrols) as more than a nice hedge until yesterday when I learned about its amazing pollen dispersal method, a kind of spring-loaded stamen slap. Nature never ceases to amaze!

They don’t call it the Granite State for nothing. This hike at new Hampshire’s Gilman Pond Conservation Area has some of the most amazing rock sculpture I’ve ever seen!

Follow up to my previous sickle/saw post. This tool rules as a no-till utensil because you can slice off whatever’s growing at ground level, without disturbing/disrupting the fungal and bacterial networks below. It’s practically my favorite hand tool because it can do so many things.

So this is truly one of those “ I was today years old when I learned this” moments. My colleague mentioned she had seen a video to this effect and after double-checking the edibility of dandelion seeds (it checked out ✅) I had to try them immediately. Some wild foods are edible but just “meh” taste wise, but these toasted seeds are amazing. The whole episode made me laugh because the commonest thing -dandelion puff ball - just got a whole new interpretation -gourmet wild food. Now if I blow on one and make a wish, I will wish I had had a lighter to toast and eat the seeds instead of blowing them to the wind. But at least by blowing them away I’ve fulfilled a wish by the future me for more!
Try this!!!

Any given day in a natural space can bring surprises. Today at school some girls found this Golden Buprestid beetle, something which I had neither seen nor heard of in my twenty years there. Its scintillating wing covers were a priceless bejeweled artwork! This thing, according to Merrill Peterson’s fine guide, is a borer, and sometimes, so the guide claims, adults can emerge from milled wood in which the larvae has lain for decades. It may be a borer, but with a look like that, certainly never boring! Here’s to being always surprised by the astonishing diversity always around us.

Setting up the solar stove. The thing sets wood afire in like 2 seconds at the focal point. Absolutely incredible!!
