Our potting-soil-bag container experiments continue. This time we’re going horizontal with lettuce. Still using that premium EB Stone 420 mix. Drain holes poked in the bottom of the bag also allow water to wick up from the shallow pan reservoir. Stay tuned for results.

Who’s in to join me for 10 (minimum!) dandelion leaves per day? Let’s do this and get into a bitter (better!) habit!

Meet Scott Howard, sculptor, designer, natural builder. Last spring he gave some beautiful lessons to our students on the basics of making cob, and then we began a re-design of some benches he made for us almost 20 years ago (when he and I first met!). Then over the summer he transformed from cob slinger to cob sculptor, and we have his beautiful work as a lasting joy. Scott truly is one of the earth heroes we need in these times, bringing not only the techniques of natural building but also artistry and beauty to the mix. Like his stuff, reach out him Scott Howard .

Eggplants are POPPING OFF in our potting soil planting bag experiment on the rooftop of Noble Rot !
I’ve already taken around 25; here I count 42(!!!) currently on the plants, AND this is just the beginning of the harvest season. Lacking growing space? Not anymore. You, too, can grow scores of eggplant from a single bag of potting soil (especially if it’s Recipe 420 Potting Soil ) with good fertilization and supplemental feeding.

To succession plant successfully, you sometimes have to do strategic harvesting. If you want to learn more about this and other continuous gardening techniques, see the interview with Charlie Nardozzi I did this past weekend with Enoch Graham. Link in bio.

To produce monstrous alpine strawberries, do not let reason sleep. Any reasonable person can see that repotting and giving them more space will create the best conditions for their growth.

None of us does this work alone. Allow me to introduce some invaluable members of the team: the black soldier fly larvae. Trigger warning: if you don’t like seeing slimy, writhing maggots, then swipe on.

Will I be able to pull an unending supply of eggplant out of mere bags of potting soil? Watch this to see how I am keeping fertility high with these Ping Tung Long eggplant planted in literal (albeit high-quality) bags of potting soil. Depending on the season, eggplant harvest can run deep into October here in Portland, so here’s hoping for bounteousness!

Next Sunday is Monthly Garden Book Group Sunday! Come join myself and Enoch Graham Enoch Graham as we interview Charlie Nardozzi (Charlie Nardozzi ) about his brand-new book The Continuous Vegetable Garden. Come learn how to even out the bumps in your gardening year, ensuring a steady supply of food year round rather than riding the boom-and-bust harvest cycles most gardeners experience. Link in bio. The fun starts at 11 am PST next Sunday, August 16.
